Hey guys. I’m a fairly new member and will be embarking on a repaint of my 64 GTO. I bought it 2 years ago and after getting the engine running, I began replacing sections of the trunk floor. I originally planned on redoing the interior and driving it. After more thought, I’ve decided to strip the paint off and start fresh to match the freshly redone interior. It was an AZ car for most of its life so the paint shows the typical sun baked/cracking.

My plan is to strip the paint with a combo of strip and clean discs and 80 grit on a DA, thoroughly clean with 700 and epoxy prime with SPI white. From there, I plan on blocking out the car, doing any bodywork necessary and epoxy prime again. I plan on staying mostly with epoxy primer as the panels all appear straight with no damage and just like the idea of using epoxy primer instead of 2k.

I also plan on spraying the engine bay in black epoxy primer while the front fenders and wheel wells are removed.

Any help/insight/recommendations are greatly appreciated. I’ve painted before (mainly motorcycle race fairings, bodywork etc) but never a full car. Im sure I’ll have a bunch of questions when I start on the car. Look forward to sharing the progress and using the SPI products

Jared

Welcome! I would use black epoxy instead of white. It sort of has a built in guide coat to show the lows and highs. Hard to see anything with white primer.

Don
Thanks Don. Would you recommend the black epoxy all the way until base goes down or switch to white epoxy as a sealer?

White epoxy sealer if you are going white for better coverage. You could use up all your black and switch to white at any point imo.

Very nice car to start out with.

Don, how high are you stacking all these cars that you have restored?
That was the second car I built and painted. House of Kolor Brandywine Kandybase over -----@--------- silver metallic. It was sold many years ago. I usually sell them to fund the next build. Cash is a finite resource for me… :)
