New plastic and epoxy.

I sprayed some reduced epoxy on some brand new headlight housings. I cleaned them with W&G well prior, however I think I screwed myself because they appeared to have been painted silver, and I never scuffed them. The epoxy went on fine, but after I sprayed the base (next morning) the finish shrivled up in spots, almost instantly. I let it dry, and found I could scrape through to the silver with my fingernail. Was this just because I didn't scuff the silver, or remove it? Now whats the most effective way so get this mess off the plastic so I can start over?

I bet the silver is a 1K product-lacquer. As a rule you should always scuff cured products before you apply anything. Are these ABS plastic?-if they are you won't be able to solvent wash the paint off and start over. Sanding will work, the best option would be to remove it all and start over. You might have been able to get away with applying base over epoxy that's flashed for 15 minutes but either way that unscuffed 1K silver paint will be a weak link. The epoxy won't provide a good solvent barrier untill it's cured-then it's the best.

Yeah, they're abs plastic. I tried some lacquer thinner on the backside and it melted the surface. Its gonna be a real PIA to clean them. I started sanding now with some 180. Lesson learned.
