So I’m getting ready to paint my 79 Firebird. I haven’t painted anything in over a decade and I know a lot has changed since then. I know this is a SPI site but is this the best epoxy primers you can get for the money? Can a DIY fella buy SPI products? I was hoping someone local carried it but no one does. I’m on a budget but don’t want to have to redo anything years down the road. This won’t be any real show car. It will be driven and want the best, most durable paint job I can afford.

SPI Epoxy is absolutely the best you can get. 100% no doubt. If you have no distributor nearby then call SPI and they will ship to your door. SPI and this forum are completely DIY friendly.
Search and read some here. There is a vast amount of good correct information here. Start a thread and ask questions and you'll get answers to any questions you may have. Welcome to the Forum.

There are some epoxies made by high-end companies like Standox and Glasurit that have just as good corrosion protection as SPI, but SPI is the only one that combines excellent corrosion resistance with medium build, sandability, and a relatively long open recoat window. It's the only primer I use on my resto jobs now. We used to use some urethane primer but epoxy is better in every way.

To add to the above, I used PPG DPLF epoxy primer prior to giving SPI a try. Not only was the pricing better but the SPI epoxy so impressed me that I have never looked back or even felt the need to try another product line.

I also live in an area where there is no local distributor. Simply call or use the Contact Us page: https://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/contact-us and fill in the form with your desired products and they will call you to complete your order.

It usually takes about 3 days for the package to arrive on my front porch but I live in rural Arizona so everything takes longer to get here.
