Are there methods already available describing how to primer existing paint which is not an enamel and too large an area to take down to the bare bling bling.

Normally sand with 180 and seal with a coat of epoxy and then a 2K primer.

It would help if we knew what you are working on and we can adjust from there.

I have a 1992 mercedes 300e with the oe paint , I meant to say in the opening post , I have paint which is not an epoxy.
If i'm not taking down to bare, is the adhesion good, great...
I also used the self etching in 1 place in a door window channel, and sanding out the etching paint by hand will take half a day.
Great site , good info

There would be no problem sanding and painting right over the factory finish, UNLESS it is a silver Mercedes #735 the the clear was starting to peel and then ALL the base must come off.

Well were prolly talking about the same brilliant silver although i am a 744 , the clear is not visible on the hood or roof; on the rear half of the car the clear is all there. The front fenders the clear has faded off , the 1st row doors same , and the 2nd row doors the clear is there.
Hi Barry
The paint on the hood is checked or cracked from overexposure to sun and I would bare metal that one.
Not sure about the rest of the car though. Not sure about the 735 / 744

Is the silver 744 compatable.

The reason the clear fell apart on the silver was because of the base breaking down not because they had bad clear, so what is done on these is they are stripped to the ecoat from the door handles up.
Other wise the new paint will de-laminate done the road as the old base is shot and just can't hang on.

I would like to see this car bar metal at least once. How many air tools do I need to do this professionally.

What grinder is good for rust in corners ie, windshield surround.

Regards.
