Outboard Engine Paint?

Getting the boat cleaned and charged up for spring fishing and noticed how ratty the outboard is looking.
It's time for a repaint and new decals. Is the paint something I can get mixed at the auto paint store or do I have to order from OMC? I looked around online and all I found were spray bombs.
Anyone have any experience with Johnson outboard paint it's kind of a dark charcoal metallic almost black.
Thanks

outboard colors change over the years. best way is to take something with the color on it. buff a spot out so its shiny. goto your jobber and look at the color chips and pick the closest one. most likely they wont have a formula specifically for your outboard and if they do it will probably not be for the same year. they also wont have a chip for it so your jobber wont have any idea what he is mixing so you may not get the right color. i do a ton of yamaha engine covers so i have my own formulas for those but nothing omc...sorry. you will want a single stage urethane for the mid section and lower unit but you can use a bc/cc for the powerhead covers.

Painting an outdrive

FWIW: We get a lot of calls on how to paint outdrives and most of the guys end up sanding/stripping the outdrive and applying 2-3 coats of SPI black epoxy primer and stopping there. Other guys will apply our black epoxy to the outdrive then apply 2-3 coats of Universal Clear.

The advantage to leaving it in epoxy is it's gonna scratched, scraped and scuffed so repairing it later is as simple as scuffing the epoxy and applying a couple more coats of epoxy. This is what 80% of the guys end up doing after they call.

I've used the OMC paint for years with little to no problem. And I will use it again and again. It looks good, and color match is good.

Thanks for the Info. guys.
Andy I was thinking about using some scuffed gray epoxy on the lower unit .
This is just an old, slow, family Fish and Ski boat but it's got a low water pickup, with external braided line, and a Bobs nosecone on the lower unit. So I thought it would be kind of funny to use a flattened gray on the gearbox like the Bullet and Allison guys use.
Dub do you know if, and where, I can get OMC paint in quarts?

I couldn't even tell you. We closed the boat shop 10 years? ago.. I had a few quarts back in the day but I remember special ordering them. Most of the time we just used Spray bombs. And spray bomb clear. They always turned out real nice tho. I'd use them again and again.. When we closed the shop I bet I had 50+cans left over. Yeah we used it that much...

I painted base clear on an evinrude outboard 5 yrs ago. My jobber had the correct PPG code in the database. I would eliminate the need for decals. . . Cost more than the paint and primer.
