Paint strippers before Epoxy Primer questions.

I have to refinish the interior rear quarter trim panels for my 65 Mustang and would like to possibly use epoxy primer on the bare metal, BUT how am i going to get to bare metal? The interior panels have a textured finish, and some spots of surface rust. It was suggested I use Navel jelly, I didn't mention I was going to use SPI Epoxy. For the rusty bits I will go the Ospho route. What I need to know is how can I remove the existing paint from the textured finish? Can't use mechanical means, as it would destroy the texture. Are there any paint strippers that I can use, and then rinse off before using SPI Epoxy.

Thanks

Rusty

Real oven cleaner will take it off..i had same panels...rust may take a little phosphoric acid...clean and rinse while chemicals are still wet...i reduced spi black epoxy about 25% to try to not fill grain up. I liked the gloss so much ,i left them in epoxy.

I thought about the oven cleaner, but wasn't sure if I could rinse it all off. Thanks for the tip on reducing the epoxy. Was going to use lacquer to finish the panels

Have you tried shop grade thinner to wipe off the old finish? Why use lacquer to refinish? What color are the panels?

they are black. I believe most of the reproduction interior colors are lacquer.

I haven't tried anything on them yet....

Black is black, I think you'll find you may just want to leave them in epoxy black, I'd reduce 25% and spray a few light coats to get the coverage you want. If you prep the metal well you'll have a great longer lasting finish than lacquer and nobody will know the difference.
