Painting Hood

I am getting ready to do a complete paint job on my car. I would like to paint the body with the doors and hood off. I would prefer to paint everything at the same time if possible. But because of available space I will either have to paint the hood hanging vertically or paint it at a separate time . Are there any downsides to painting the hood vertically? And if so is there anything I could do to minimize them?

Thanks again for your time.

Many prefer to paint panels, especially hoods, vertically. Spray painting vertically reduces trash in the paint.

The two immediate downsides would be risk of a run on the hood and metallics should be sprayed on the panel in the orientation that it will be on the car.

First time I did my fenders and hood I did them horizontally thinking that I would reduce the chance for runs. Big mistake in my case. It increased the dust nibs and trash in the paint exponentially.

Thank you for the replies. My paint does have a metallic in it but it is a small amount and very fine. Barely visible on a spray out panel. I guess the decision will be do I risk the metallic not orienting correctly vs a potential change in "look" due to spraying a different day, different pressures, etc.

If I had to choose between the two I’d rather risk the metallic sprayed in same day but vertically.

All that being said, trash is far easier to fix or bury than a huge run or sag.

Thanks Lizer
just to make sure I understand, you would opt to paint the hood hung vertically at the same time as the rest of the pieces rather than horizontally a day or two later?

hang your hood with the underside facing the way the air flows. and the top side facing the exhaust fan if that makes sense. that way any trash brought in will be on the underside of the hood. when i do this. it really helps minimize nibs. i think i had 3 nibs on my hood when i cleared it, and its like 25 sq ft..
