Picture of my epoxy problem

OK as you can see when I spray this white epoxy unreduced it sprays great accept for these orange peel spots that appear at random. They are usually about 2" in diameter.

My black spi epoxy doesn't due this. I tried adding %50 reducer so it was 1:1:1 and this seamed to help allot. The white epoxy is a few years old but it has always done this. I use to think I was getting water in the line but the black never does this. I am using new part B epoxy catalist and it still does this.

It is no biggy I just shoot another coat over it and then block it flat with 180 the next day before I shoot 2K but what the hell is causing this???

Maybe this is easier to view

Astro DX 1.3 tip astro recommends 41-44 on the gun handle so I run about 42 psi.

Like I say I have a gallon of black epoxy and it never does this, I can shoot it like glass.

I did buy a new gallon of white spi epoxy I am tempted to open it and shoot a little and see if I just got a bad gallon? (God I hate to say that, I know I will end up being wrong)

As you can see it lays down great accept for these random 1.5" diameter orange peel like spots.

I am shooting over scuffed epoxy and filler, however it did this when I shot it on bare steel as well.

Ideas:
Widen fan.
Make sure air pressure at the wall is at least 125lbs or higher for right SCFM.
Fluid adjustment 2-2.5 turns out.

White is just a bit more finicky than black for some reason, has always been so. That spot is just a little too wet. The suggestions Barry gives you are basically for more air and less material, if you still have problems you could also pick up your travel speed a bit especially on the first coat.

I had a couple of spots like that, I'm 99% sure it was operator error as I was shooting t eh inside of the "shell", a confined space with all kinds of protrusions

I am using a DiVilbiss Finishline 3 at the recommended 23 psi at the inlet with the trigger pulled.

Anyone here use that gun with SPI epoxy have a different recommendation, or a "fine" tuned value?

the epoxy will do that when it goes on too heavy. there is nothing wrong with it. if your borderline too heave with it and you get slightly heavier coat in one spot that is what happens. the reducer helps because you are putting on wet coats that are thinner. i get this really bad when i use my 1.9 sata primer gun. i only use it with the epoxy when i dont care what it will look like. if i want it looking nice i spray it with my 1.4 basecoat gun and 25% reducer then no problems.

I'va managed to get spots like that and not just with epoxy. I pull the trigger at the wrong time and put a big ol blast of paint in a spot .

Lately, I have been spraying all my epoxy with a 1.4 and the only time I reduce it is for a sealer coat prior to base.
Maybe its just me but the epoxy appears to be thinner than what I remember and a straight 1:1 mix works great.

If my senile old mind remembers correctly Barry recently posted about the very thing you mention

So most of you feel a 1.4 tip would work better for epoxy?

BTW I blocked that flat with 220 and it has 2K on it now.

I did take my regulator off the wall the damn thing is a high end reg. that comes with the Devilbiss Descant setup the DAD-500.

But the damn regulator has a 1/16" dia hole the air has to pass through. that kind of negates the hi flow couplings doesn't it???

The chain is as strong as the weakest link type thing?

Sure hold true in drag racing, does it apply here?

What size tip are you using?

Sorry I haven't answered you, I think you asked before, I think it's a 1.8? Does it say on the tip somewhere?

Yes on the rim edge of the tip it will say either 13, 15, 18, or 22

Devilbiss HAR-507 is rated for 60 cfm
