Plastic bumper paint peeling off.

M

Mike.

Need your help guys. while cleaning the rear bumper on my sons car (1993 honda accord) with the pressure washer the paint started peeling off. Would wet sanding all the paint off with 220 then all sanding steps to 400 be acceptable? After all sanding steps are done use adpro followed by primer sealer be the right way, or am I on the wrong track? I looked for marking on the inside of the bumper couldnt find anything. Im lost at this point.

I think all the Honda bumpers need adpro. Stripping the cover is going to be a pita but yes sanding the way you described would work fine. I like epoxy primer for bumper covers

Thanks Bob, I see alot of sanding here shortly. Is ther any preferred method for using spi adpro then followed by epoxy. Kudos to SPI and all of its members for honest and professinal help. Look foward to speaking with barry here shortly to place an order.

If the paint came off really easily, try seeing how much you can take off with the power sprayer. I had a car that had a small part of the bumper peeling and with in 10 min. I had the whole thing down to plastic.

Was hoping for same results spotty at best, some of paint seems to have good adhesion. I have entertained paint stripper for plastic, but Im afraid the plastic might retain some of the stripper and cause issues down the line.

If you use paint stripper for plastic make sure to give it a good water wash afterwards, then do your sanding and scuffing and reclean

If paint stripper is acceptaple, I wiil try a small patch first(inside of bumper) to check for any negative effects. Then good o'l blue dawn dish soap to the rescue. I see that it is mentioned often that most use it as a pre cleaning agent. After working in the Aircraft business for 5 years, Dawn dish soap was the only detergent approved from over the counter products, that was deemed non corosive to aluminum. so is simple green but not as effective for grease and residue removal. Good stuff, even wildlife approved.
