what is it with this stuff. on several boards i visit they are just spell bound by it. the corvette site is the worst. but then there are way too many garage experts there anyway . wasn't too bad 20 years ago when it came out but it was never really a top shelf primer imo . i just cant understand guys believing any acrylic urethane primer is as good of a sealer as epoxy. it shrinks something terrible if shot thick . i guess it goes along with the omni or nason mentality . they will read some one time painters post on how wonderful it is. these same poster will never come back and own up to the disasters they had .
i just need to understand this. i'm tired of trying to help on sites only to get into a pissing match with some engineer or insurance salesman who painted one car .

thoughts ?????

I know of one "the go to guy" on a website that is sold on POR15. He recently posted that he once used a hi end primer - K36. I tried to explain it is not as good and costs more than SPI Epoxy. It all fell on deaf ears and feeble excuses such as I always use one product line from start to finish.

Now he is being asked advice on which paint stripper to use to take of the repaint so they can da sand the oem finish and repaint it. This will be interesting,ROFLOL.

moral of the story: there are dumb shits everywhere.

I used a lot of K36 back in the late 80's early 90's when I was also using DP epoxy, worked OK but I didn't try to use it to build much and I gave it plenty of time to cure. They revised the mix ratio I know, I had an old timer call me a little while back that couldn't get it to shoot wet out of his old Binks suction feed and the ratio was totally different than when it was originally introduced. I'd take SPI turbo primer over it any day, much quicker cure IMO, same sandability, equal build, better pricing-JMO.

Shine,

I am interested to know why you think Omni is a poor choice in paint?
I am a hobbyist and would appreciate your recommendation of a good Acrylic Urethane paint at a reasonable price.

omni / nason and the like are bottom of the barrel. used for car lot work. it is cheap in every way. covers poorly so you use more . never EVER listen to counter people at paint supply unless you know them very well . saving a few bucks on paint is the absolute worst thing you can do. it is the most important part. you can use good resins or junk resins. why go to the trouble of using spi if your going to cover it with an inferior resin .

I think it is just name association...and the guys who are just getting into this just keep repeating it based off of what these other "forum professionals" recommend. It could quite possibly be the ONLY primer they've ever used so they have no choice but to keep referring it. They have no idea there are better products out there...much because they've only done ONE project with ONE system of materials. Dupont and PPG...everyone knows those names...even the guys who dont do this for a living and barely have any knowledge of painting or paint materials.

Even the ones who RAVE about k36.....its really the only primer they have used, quality atleast (if you want to call k36 quality). I'm doing a project now, and the paint code i was given was a dupont paint code. He asked me if thats what i would be using...i said no. He then was concerned about getting the right color...i said just give me the dupont code and i can pull it with my paint system. He said..."well as long as what you use is as good as chromabase or better". People just assume ppg and dupont rule the world because they just know those names and have been around forever....their thinking is acknowledged by those others on the other forums who are "experts". Funny, some of those "experts" that are always giving advice and recommending these products......never see any of their own projects or their own work.

usually the same ones who wash with lacquer thinner and use duraglass . it's sad because there is some poor guy out there who listens to it and screws the pooch on his car. there are some guru's out there that never post any proof. just go on and on about all the restorations they do and what not. you have to prove it to me. show me or stfu .

K36, is a unique item that should be taught in very business marketing class.

When K36 came out (must have been in mid 80's ??) it was the best primer out there and a standard everyone tried to copy back then.

It has changed many times over the years from good to bad to good and back over and over, but the name had such notoriety, they kept the name and it is still a household name.

they can flame me all they want but i aint sealing fiberglass with a urethane primer nor will i use it for build . just scares hell out of me.
