Prepping bare metal question

Off topic.....Are all pot blasters basically the same? I have a HF one and it kinda blows...

I hate blasting stuff, but sometimes it has to be done.

I have the northern tool one and it is basically the same. I found that replacing the gun and nozzle with a heavier duty ALC part made a huge difference. Might have had to change to hose too, can’t remember since it was roughly 12 years ago.

The original so called Deadman valve was a real pos, actually squeezed the 'tubing' feed line, and was quickly replaced with a homemade ball valve Rube Goldberg affair and then got a Real deadman which still gets ate up but nothing compared to the previous 2.
Thing that surprises my about these pots,is how long the simple rubber O ring has lasted on the cap. I still have my original. Figured it would be the first to go.
Yeah it's Always 'best to get it in Epoxy asap.
Sometimes though, you can't or don't and pertinent information about the possibilities of not doing so is a relevant discussion.

I now leave the ball valve at the end of the hose open and adjust the media flow at the ball valve beneath the tank.
Air to the tank is full open, air to the gun is around 1/2 open to start and then I adjust the media flow to minimum needed to clean the metal. This eliminates the gush of media that has settled in the hose when using the deadman valve or shutting the valve at the end of the hose.

Remember, I am not a professional!!!

I also use a 3/16 nozzle to prevent those pesky rogue oversized pieces of media from plugging the nozzle. Black Diamond in particular has the problem.

I guess I should have clarified.....Mine just seem to acts weird when you fill it at first. It will just spit out sand in a large stream for a minute and then function properly. I have tried adjusting the valves on the top and bottom. Sometimes it works great, sometimes its shit....

I use a similar one (Texas Blaster). Added a little pneumatic vibrator just above the media valve. Seems to keep the crushed glass flowing without open valve too far. The vibrator doesn't eat too much air. Seems to have improved process a some.

That’s because you don’t shut off the media valve at the bottom of the tank immediately after you finish blasting.

Keep an eye out for a Lindsay blaster, they're worth switching to if you can find one at a reasonable price. They have a cast iron mix valve with a lever to adjust media flow instead of a ball valve. We picked up a small one in 2021 and I like using it over our bigger blaster due to the much better mix valve design. I might graft the valve onto our bigger blast tank for more capacity, the little one we have only holds one 50 pound bag.

I do very little blasting, but like you said, sometimes it is needed.
I keep it painfully simple.
I just use this HF cheapo unit with TSC Black Diamond Red Stripe coal slag. Out behind the shop and let the media fall in the gravel.
Flawless for my needs.

Be interested in seeing what exactly you are using.
This website has a picture and an exploded view of the Lindsay style valve. It's a cast iron housing that bolts to a flange on the bottom of the tank, there's a disc inside that rotates to open or close the sand flow. The disc has a linkage arm connected to a handle that goes up to the top so it's easy to adjust standing up without having to reach under the tank.

I fix that problem by pouring the media through a wire kitchen strainer first. It takes out the big pieces and then no clogging issues.
