Purchasing a new random orbit sander, opinions?

Well, I'm going to get a palm sander to go with my "handled" sander. It will mostly be used for removing old paint and sanding mud. It won't be used for finish sanding, I do all of that by hand. I have been looking at Ingersol Rand since I've had good luck with their tools, the "Max" series specifically.

1. Should I go with 3/16" or 3/8" orbit?

2. Any other brand or models you guys recommend?

I was using dynabrade sanders, but have switched to 3m they are much smoother in my opinion. If you're just using it for rough work and paint removal it may be worth looking into a mud hog, one of the best investments I've made

I did see the mud hog, looks like a beast! I don't know enough about air sanders to know whether it'd be a good deal for me or not. I have heard Dynabrade are good tools, and didn't even know 3M made any!

The mudhog is a beast and for rough filler shaping and removing paint it shines for sure, but, it will not take the place of a 6 in. it is very nice to have in addition to a standard 6in for sure. I typically always strip to bare steel and if i am remembering right then the mud hog with 40 grit on it stripped a deck lid with not bad paint on it in about 15 minutes with 40 grit green corps paper.

I did only have dynabrade 6 in but a friend of mine kept telling me the 3m stuff felt better, he dropped it off and i used it for about a week then ordered 2 of my own, the dynabrade is living in the toolbox currently.

The 3m sanders arent cheap but they arent really unreasonable either, I think I gave about 170 for each of mine.

The mudhog is pretty pricey i got mine from matco and it was around 300 i think but it has saved tons of time stripping panels, id say its about paid for itself in that sense.

one of the nice things about the mudhog is that it spins more like a grinder i guess youd say, its a gear reduced output.

anywhoo im sure other guys on here have other preferences, best of luck wading thru the limitless choices......

my 6 inchers are all 3/16 i believe, i mostly use them for interface pad work, finishing film and trizact. I dont know that Ive ever used a 3/8 orbit myself. but im sure someone here has

Really leaning toward a gear driven 8" since it's mainly for paint removal. I already have a 2 handed D/A, I believe 3/16" orbit, so I can use that for my primer/2k work. I was hoping to get a palm sander since I think I would like it better, maybe I'll wait and get the finer orbit palm sander for finish work.

Not a bad move prob. I use my 8" for paint removal and filler shaping like I said. Since I've gotten it my 6" stuff is pretty much relagated to either a spot the 8" won't fit or I do all of my last 2k coat with an interface pad prior to sealer.

Pulled the trigger on the Mud Hog from Dynabrade, 8". Also ordered a couple sets of green 40 & 80 grit 3M stickits.
