Question about retarder.

For you that paint a fair amount of time, I'm going to make a retarder next spring and there are two ways of making one, one that would only work in clear and SS and one that would be for primer only.

That is the one way, the other way is make one that will work in both and if this is done, will be very effective in primer use but you will need to use twice as much to do same thing in clear or SS use.

Need to start now as need to decide if I need two labels or one and get them designed and going.

Personally would rather stock 1 on the shelf.

Right now I see more of a use for it in the primers. On these restos we prime more than paint. So using a little extra in the clear or ss wouldn't really bother me. JMO...

I agree with Jeremy.. Make it as stout as you can for the 2k's and occasional splash added to a poly in dead of summer.. Ive only used actual retarder a couple of times and i cant remember it being very noticeable to me, but I only added like a cap or 2 full to a sprayable quart lol

Oh, you're supposed to mix it into the paint?

The retarder would never be mixed in say a base but could be used in a single stage as well at the clears or primers on real hot days when doing a large area.
Biggest benefit would be being used as a flow coat for last coat of clear and I will need to test when I make it but could be a real good burn in for clear blending.

I think you guys are right and their should just be one and thanks for the feedback, in next few weeks will make some trial tests and see what we can come up with.

For what I do, having a great blender would be huge.

I use to use a retarder a lot back in my "enamel" days, now I only use it in my
furniture lacquer on my wood projects, melts it in real nice on the last couple of coats.
But now with the "extra slow" reducer I can get, it kind of replaced retarder in my car paints.
