Ok so many opinions on this subject.ive painted a deck lid bc/cc House of kolor 3 coats base 3 coats clear.wetsanded all the op out with600 wet and flow coated 3 coats HOK UC-35 clear. got some dirtt nibs and wet sanded all down wih 1500 on a hard block.im gonna sand with 2000 eagle then 2500 eagle bufflex green(wet).Ive always used presta uc creme and wool pads never used foam. should i switch?I see ODG uses 3M super duty that sttuff is pretty coarse! But im a newbie and am looking for direction.THANKS! MIKE FROM JACKSON NJ(NEAR JIM.C)

I use foam and the 3m perfect it system, getting ready to switch to foam and chem guys tho...

I've seen people swirl panels to death with superduty and a wool pad on fresh clear requiring more sanding to correct. I like the 3m perfect it system also but presta works good too

wool and superduty are a thing of the past . i used them for years but they only work on rock hard paint. i use foam and chemical guys .

I use Presta system completely.. I use their pads and products.. I switched to them because 3m kept jacking the prices... I do think 3m is better, but I dont run a collision shop and the finish i get with Presta is beautiful.. Food for thought

once years ago i ran out of clean cut . in a hurry so i bought some 3m finessit . hated it . then i bought some presta from barry. it was good . when that gal ran low i tried to order some more clean cut but they had discontinued it. ticked me off. i went ahead and ordered a sample pak of the vseries from chemical guys after complaining about it. then had to call back and eat crow. it is really good stuff. little better than presta but light years ahead of 3m . goes a long way as it does not dry out and get dusty . i use their pad lube also .

Do you guys wetsand with a DA or by hand. If its a DA, do you spin the foam or paper faster or slower than if you were DA'ing for paint. Most of the buffing looks really good, but every so often there is a scratch that shows up so I am wondering if its speed has anything to do with it or if we should stop using a DA all together.

I use a DA with interface pad and DRY finishing film, 1000, 1500, 2000, then wet trizact, 3000, then 5000. I set my DA to kill but I run the wall regulator at about 40 lbs. I also microfiber wipe my panels between grits just in case there's any dust or loose grit from the last step.

thanks, one of our problems is the sticky paper we are using on the DA. Cant seem to find the 2000 film anywhere though. Is it different than their hook it purple system?

jim wont steer you wrong. i like eagle and norton . the trick is to spend your time sanding. i sand to 3k then polish with cg vseries compounds.

Spent far too much time sanding, thats for sure. He used Perfect it on the Jeep before I found SPI, did real nice. Did the same with this one and its just not working. We went to the CG stuff, learning to use it, find the proper pad for us. Went with the kit like you said in the other thread, mainly with 34 and 36 and the orange pad, then tried the green, blue pads. Havent even gotten to the 38 yet and black pad because the one scratch ends up showing up. I guess its being able to see the scratch when the clear is hazy from sanding. Spray water on the panel, thats all we want it to look like. Cant see the scratch, go thru the buff and out it shows.

We went to flex pad to get some real soft pads, but they almost have a chalk on the face and nothing wants to stick, especially when wet. Tried the featheredge adhesive and all that does is make it lumpy under the paper and the glue end up on the car when the disc flies off. We found the interface pad and saw the soft pads were not necessary, now its getting hook and loop to keep the discs on the interface pad and start the cycle again and again.

the hexlogic yellow pad is the heavy cutting pad. start with the 32 with yellow then switch to orange 34-36 the black with 38 . i dry sand. but i use very low speed. heat melts the dust and give you pig tails.

What do you buff with for tight spots/body line creases? Do they make hand-specific hexlogic pads?

they make small pads for the buffer i use 3 in pads on my flex all the time. you can use the 3-4 in pads by hand.

If you cant find a little pad for yours, you can also grab a 3m headlight restoration kit, they have a nice orange pad and a piece of 3000 Trizac foam in there. It just has a 1/4 straght arbor though but both are velcro that you should be able to get a backup pad for your DA. Got a little 2" harbor freight angle grinder looking little DA, but they are mixed with 5/16-24 and their regular 6MM threads though so replacements are a pain. I guess if you can use just a rotary they would work if you cant find something else.

Those interface pads that Bob talked about the 3M 05777 are stackable too, so that creates quite a soft pliable pad for those areas like at the roof line to quarter panel areas with a foam bonnet. We used 3 and it was like a mothers wheel polishing ball. I dont know how the paper is gonna work though. But those interface pads are also available in 3".

When you say dry with the DA, are either of you using vacuums for the dust? I noticed you can get paper with holes. We have a dewalt 5" electric DA that has a little fan behind the pad and a bag.

I don't know about shine but I don't use a vacuum rig, I am currently running eagle finish films but was using 3m finish film up to 2000 grit that I had gotten from my jobber, its all hookit tho.

no vaccum here. i do keep a rag handy to keep the panel wiped off while sanding. another thing that causes the pigtails .
once you leave the 3m world there is a whole new world out there. you can get foam pads from 1000 up.

well, I guess I am just entering the 3Mworld with the paper. Ususally just used mcmaster or mscdirect, had that klingspor guy stop in, got 1500 paper that dont stick, their foam pads have ranges, we got the 1800-2200 and 2800-3500 ones. Thats why I asked about speed. I used them by hand with just water and ended up with a white froth from the clear. Put them on the DA and there is not much of that froth. So they seem to want to work slower to cut. But buying a range, I am assuming it starts at 2800 and when it wears out its closer to 3500. So they are just copying someone elses stuff. McMaster has foam om 2000 and 4000, got one of the 2000 last time, 5.12 each, it felt sharper than 1000 grit paper. I couldnt find the 3M 2000 film so I should have guessed he went away from 3M. I guess I will get some eagle to see the difference so I can save some money next time. At least eagle has different pricing for different grits.
