Resprators

My fresh air pump has taken a crap, started smelling smoke in the hood, ran down the basement to see the pump filled with fire...

Anyway, I'm close enough to being done with this car and finances are tight so I probably won't replace the pump.

Curious what respirators people like? Just whatever the AB supply place has? Do I need one that covers my eyes?

Depends on what you plan on using it for. If you are doing any product with ISO's, your lungs, eyes and skin all need to be protected. I think you will get more responses if you explain what kind of work you will continue doing and what products you will use. Personally, if I lost my pump and I was doing any more painting, replacing my pump would not be an option. If your downsizing to a face type mask, make sure you understand correct filters and expiration dates apply.

Thanks! I have a few more coats of epoxy to do, 2K in spots, maybe some slick sand in spots, urethane single stage PPG.

Some of the guys who use mouth and nose respirators will be able to give you some information on those options. Just remember once you open up a sealed cartridge, its only good until the expiration shown on the label. They also do not protect your eyes, which suck up ISO's same as your lungs absorb them. If this is all the painting you are going to do, I can understand why you want to finish the project without investing in another pump for your fresh air system. I would think the price of repairing your pump would be a wash with the optional safety equipment you will be looking at to finish the project. Did you get a quote on repair?

You don't mention what brand fresh air pump you have. The one I have is a basic full face mask and pump from Turbine Products. They sell the pump alone for $270 (http://www.turbineproducts.com/supplied-fresh-air-respirator-turbine-breathing-pump/). An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure -- I think I'd buy a new pump and be safe. If you start coughing, the average cost of a Chest CT scan is about $785 (a lot of insurance companies don't cover them if you aren't a smoker).

If you don't want to spend $270, you'll still need to protect your eyes, which means you'll need a 3M style full-face mask for about $100 plus the cost of filters ($20 a pair). That makes the price difference $150 unless you need more filters. Consider the cost of the pump like a health insurance premium.

I grew up in the pre-OSHA/EPA United States and used a handkerchief bandanna when I had to spend time in the red-lead primer paint corner of the factory. That explains a lot...

Thanks guys, I did get a new pump on order, it's not here yet. I had some induced epoxy I didn't want to go bad so I bought a $20 3M mask from the local jobber. Wow, did I hate painting with that. Even though I should have known based on my need to change the tear offs on the face shield of the hood, I wasn't ready for the blow back at certain points, especially since I'm used to getting right in there with the full hood.

Plus every time I changed my facial expression I got a whiff of epoxy. I'm going to try to wait until the new pump gets here to do anymore painting.

Thanks for posting that link Bob, I have a pump and full face mask kit from them on a wish list. Nice price!

Bob, I am thinking about purchasing a Breathe Cool II system from Turbine Products and am having a hard time deciding whether I should get the full hood or the full face mask. If I may ask, how do you protect the skin on your head and neck when you use your full face mask? I'm concerned about the ISO's entering my body through my skin if I just go with the full face mask.

Meiser, I have hooded coveralls that have elastic openings for hands, feet and face. Not sure if it's the best deal but I bought Florida Coast Coveralls for about $10:

I also have a couple of even cheaper ones at Amazon:

Thanks for the response Bob. That looks like a great setup. I'd rather purchase the full face mask rather than the hood as the hood looks a little too bulky for my tastes and I've heard that others have had problems with the way it fits and the fact that it doesn't turn as you turn your head while painting. Thanks again.

I've done a lot of painting with tyvek hoods. You have to have the hard hat type head band inside which fits your head and snaps on to the hood. That helps the hood turn with your head. But I still like the full face fitted masks better. The hoods can balloon up and lift themselves off your head while you are spraying, also the glare of the big arched "window" lens can make it tough to see what you are doing. If you are painting stuff that you could just as well do with your eyes closed because it's so easy, then the hood is nice. But the mask is rock solid, the lens stays at the same angle to your face all the time no matter how twisted up you get in the booth.

Just my opinion.

second the tyvek hoods. I have never used the full face mask because I much prefer the hoods. Personally, I have never experienced the non twisting with head movement issue. I think the key is to make sure the air supply hose is connected to the waist belt so the weight of the air hose to the belt is on the belt and not the connection to the hood.

i have used the hoods for 20 years or more. once you get use to them they are fine. if the balloon off your head turn down the air !

I use this Sata Vision 2000 unit" http://www.autopalete.lv/public/Keretookoja_seadmed/SATA/76455_Respirators.pdf." complete with oil-less compressor and filters. The face shield snaps off for replacement. I've never detected any fumes while using it. It's a bit pricey, but I've had cancer twice, so not taking any chances.....Bill
