Restoration shop Urethane Basecoat vs. Glasurit 55 line: opinions?

Hello,
Avid lurker of the forums here. Serious people on here chasing the perfect paint job..
I have sprayed Glasurit for many years, done multiple cars with it both in a production environment and a restoration shop environment, I love the the paint. Recently I have sparted using SPI products and really like the products.
Here's my question: Has anyone used TCP Global's Restoration shop urethane basecoat? I have used it on one complete ( a daily driver) with Universal Clear and was quite surprised how nice it turned out.
MY reason for considering the change? Cost. Glasurit through my local jobber is pushing $1500. TCP Global is $420.
I would love some opinions. Is TCP lacking in quality? Any compatibility issues with SPI Products?
Thanks for any help you can provide,
Peter

I'm assuming you are talking about Glasurit 55 base versus Restoration Shop base? Not knowing what color you priced in the two systems I'm assuming you are comparing similar colors. I'll bet the color you sprayed was a solid. There is a reason (several) that the price is so different. First the cheap base uses lower quality toner and metallic toners. Little or no UV protection, (ever seen base fade under still good clear?) Coverage and other things. If you shot the same color side by side you would see the difference. Metallic especially is where the cheap bases don't compare to quality base. The metallic is usually muddy and has much less DOI versus higher quality bases.
If you want a lower priced base that is very good quality look at Motobase. Motobase is very similar to Glasurit, covers great, toners and metallic are very good. If you are trying to stay on a budget it's hard to beat Motobase.

Kind of heresy to compare Glasurit to TCP no name private label base. :) Like comparing a Mercedes to a Yugo. I sure as hell wouldn't use the TCP stuff on restoration work. Maybe used cars, stuff that doesn't matter. But if it matters no way,

i agree with chris. i pained a car using shop line basecoat and universal clear. about 4 years later me and my buddy painted his his car in the same exact color but in a better quality basecoat. the results were noticeably better. the color was much more vibrant, and rich. ill never use lower end base coats on anything that matters anymore.

With todays prices on materials, you cant fault people for looking around and trying other alternatives.

So far as far as cheap bases go, the only ones I have found that were "decent" is wanda and urechem.

IMO Shopline is garbage and nason is garbage. Those are the only 2 low line bases I have worked with.

The only reason I ever tried wanda on a project was from Chad's recommendation. Coverage was great IMO. Automotive Art is still my go to, but even at the 2:1 reduction with the wanda it was a cheaper option on particular project.

This is great guys. No TCP global for me. Any input on Wanda? I will read up on the this forum about Wanda. I definitely do not want to cheap out on this car but if I can save a buck...

I’m surprised at the Wanda coverage comments because the most common complaint I see on it is poor coverage.

I’ve been using Motobase and Motocryl for the last several years on a number of projects. They do indeed have very good coverage.

I’ve used Wanda single stage on a few projects and no complaints on coverage there either.

Since Urekem was mentioned I’ve used a number of their base colors and their glamour clear when I was doing golf carts because of the price point. Their basecoats covered very well too.

i have had a wanda system in my shop now for prob 8 years. coverage is fantastic. i have never had any color take more than 3 coats. usually its covered in 2. the only thing i will say is dont use the wanda reducer with it. use spi reducer and it will spray night and day better. wanda is almost identical to diamont base which is 3-4 times the cost.

Thanks so much for the information. I ordered a quart of Motobase today from Ed at Chads Paints supply. dark blue pearl. I plan on doing a sprayout and if the car owner likes it I will order 2 gallons. I plan on using SPI's slow reducer and giving a lot of flash time between coats and Universal clear when it come time to shoot the car.
Many thanks for your knowledge and thoughts,
Peter
