Sanding Basecoat

After 2 coats of black Prospray base I decided to sand out some trash with 1000 wet on a Motorguard memory foam pad. Sanding caused something like pin holes in the base in an area about 4 inches in diameter. It looks like the base was torn out of this area and looks like speckles. The base was about 3 hours old when I sanded it. What did I do wrong and how can I fix it?

That's odd! Do the pinholes look deep? What is under the basecoat?

Nothing but spi epoxy under the base. They are not very deep from what I can tell. I have had this before just not as bad. The base loads up the paper too it makes speckles on the paper. I think the base is sticking to my paper and comming off the car.

Yes, in fact if your paper is loading up with specks of base it can also make for some heavy scratches when sanding. Maybe sand it some more and shoot another coat or two and see how it looks. You can also use solvent based wax and grease remover or mineral spirits when wetsanding and it'll usually cure that sandpaper loading problem but it's messy.

I usually use the foam scuff pads to nib the pro-spray, works so much better than anything else I have tried.

Thanks Bob and Chad. I need to change my pocedure for sure. I am not familier with the scuff pads you are referring to. Do you have a part number for them?
