There really is a lot to grit technology that makes things act different. Also, if the sh*t don't clog, it will sand more aggressive. If you're resanding dust you just sanded, results will be slower & paper life less.
Got a couple of festool 6" sanders at work now, which have a good dust pickup vacuum setup, which works great with wood & any surface which is flat enough for the vacuum. Not sanding your dust really does speed things up.
