SEM Hot Rod Black - SS matte finish

Shooting it with an Iwata 1.4 silver cap - any gun recommendations or would it be about the same as regular base?

I shot the Pro-spray in the same gun except I stupidly didn't write it down or at least that I can find, would 20 to 24 w/the trigger pulled be adequate, anyone have experience with this stuff?

thanks!

I just pulled the tech sheet online & I still don't really understand how they can recommend 8 to 10 PSI at the cap, probably just me being dense but thats with the trigger pulled-correct? So if I'm running the wall reg on the end of my Sharpe 3 stage dryer @105 ish #'s & the gun reg @ about 28 to 30 that gives me around 20 w/trigger pulled or somewhere close to that, if I set it so I'm getting 10 psi w/trigger on the paint will be sputtering out of the gun I assume. At what point is it a "go by feel" thing for the pressure & fan vs. following a tech sheet.

Since I dont spray that often it takes a bit to get back into the right mindset for the different types of paint.

25 lbs at the gun and adjust from there .

at the gun reg or w/trigger pulled? I'm assuming its at the gun reg but wanted to check.
thx!

Exactly. I tried shooting it at a lesser air pressure and ended up sanding and re-shooting. BondoKing finally got me straightened out by convincing me to boldly go where I had never gone before and upping the pressure on the LPH into the 20s and beyond.

8-10 psi at the cap is not the same as pressure at the gun. Pull the trigger wide open while spraying material and set to 25 psi like Shine said.

trigger pulled. wall reg wide open gun reg at 22-25 .

that what I thought, thanks - makes sense. I'm used to shooting the epoxy, running the gun reg up to about 27-30 & then adjusting the fan, I shoot epoxy only with the Astro Evo & that works fine, I think that ends up about 22-23 w/the trigger pulled.

So does anything really shoot at 8 or 10 PSI w/the trigger pulled & actually come out of a gun OK?

Only way to set pressure at the cap is with the special cap gauge. The 10 psi cap pressure is an EPA requirement and the EPA doesn't care what your paint job looks like. Spotted owls drop out of the sky at 11 psi.

Shot the wing window frames & door moldings w/the LPH 400 @ 25 PSI & a narrow fan, the parts came out fantastic. that stuff shoots almost like the black epoxy, seems like pretty nice paint, has a nice satiny finish to it.

I have been on other sites and guys swear the LPH will shoot great at 16 psi at the gun and some claim even lower. Personally, I have not been able to get it to lay down except at the pressures recommended by shine. I shoot base at 20 psi with the trigger pulled wide open and clear at 26 psi. I confess I am still new to this gun and it may have capabilities that my skill level doesn't match.

depending on the material , reduction etc then yes there are times that 18 lbs will work fine. i usually come down to around 22. also depends on your reg. i have one from iwata and it is 3 or more lbs different than the others i have. the sharpe reg i have does good to read the same every time.

Sadly I dont even know the brand of my reg's as they originally came with the Astro's I bought - they seem like decent reg's but I've never checked them against a different gauge. I bought another one from Spray Gun World & its different then the original two.

Thats why its always been a kind of "feel" thing for me when setting up to shoot. I did shoot the SEM @ the spec's shine recommended & it worked great, the nice thing about the Iwata is the fan is easily controllable vs. the Astro & of course it seems to spray great. That damn clear coat is the hardest to master though:(

Is the SEM hotrod black a 2K or 1K? It seems to me I remember it being offered in aresol or 1 quart cans? I hear Akzo Nobel/Sikkens isn't going to continue to make the Autocryl single stage Rally Black I have been using so it looks like I'll need to find a replacement. The Rally Black is the toughest satin black I have ever seen-expensive though!

its a 2K, comes in a qt. kit w/reducer & hardener in 1/2 pt. cans - about $50 for the kit i bought from R & E Paint - 870-425-8131

i think when i checked w/local Jobber Wesco it was about $90 from them - rip off!

so if you cant spary anything @ 8 to 10psi & no one has the special gauge to measure tip PSI why in the h*ll is it on everything to do with paint. It just seems stupid of the EPA (or whomever) to create a standard no one will really be able to follow, it must of evolved out of somewhere. And yes, governments wasteful, inefficient, yada, yada but that still doesn't explain it.

Oop's, I digressed :)

i believe they dropped there national rule voc and only have socal 2.8 voc compliant for the nation and it makes it more money.

I just remember when I first got the astro guns & followed the gun instructions to a "T" & it all came out like crap, op, blob's, etc.... up the pressure & it was a whole nother world!

i figure I try hard enough to be green in my daily life, recycle, reuse materials from one project to another, retro fit energy efficient upgrades into my projects & properties, recycle old cars :D:D, I figure a little VOC I produce is forgiven in the overall picture.

I have a partner who on a job will want to save every piece of metal to recycle & of course I'm too lazy to spend the time chasing EVERY nail or tidbit so I get called the "earth hater" - all in good fun.
