Small parts gun selection

I saw the posts with using SPI epoxy black for underhood paint. I would like to get the same look on an aluminum intake, valve covers, engine accessory brackets, etc from a 1994 mustang. Later would use the gun for body panels/cars. Maybe 2 different guns are needed for large panels and small engine parts?

What gun would you recommend? I see the Vapor 2.0 recommended for epoxy, but will it be good for small parts with no zebra stripping?

Budget: sata 5000 hvlp or Lhp 440 is within reach if necessary to get a good result.

Experience: I've messed around with a purple HF gun. No formal experience.

The LPH440 is a discontinued gun I believe, it was designed as a primer gun. I have one with a 1.6 tip and it can lay down the epoxy very nice, it would certainly work very well for smaller parts. But you wouldn't be able to use it for much else, it has a very narrow fan compared to say a LPH400 or W400.

The closest you can find now a days from Iwata for smaller parts like that is an LPH300, I have one in size 1.4 and it can lay down clear, sealer, basecoat, epoxy, you name it. But it is made for
smaller jobs, you'd be lucky to get a fan width of 5" with it. The biggest jobs I do with it is a bumper and that's about it, if I tried to paint 2 big panels I'd fall asleep while using it lol

I haven't had a chance to try a SATA 5000 hvlp yet, I just know you better have a big compressor to use it, it's an air hog.

I'm a SATA guy through and through and although some may think differently, no I don't work for them.:) That being said if your budget permits go for a Sata 5000 RP 1.3, it is hands down the best gun I've ever used,I mainly use it for clear but it will shoot single stage equally as good. It will make a mediocre painter look good, it's that good of a gun. That being said, any full size gun is going to be a compromise on smaller parts. On a high end gun like the SATA you can adjust the material flow and fan pattern though and it will work nicely on smaller parts.

Does the sata 100 B F spray primer better than the 5000 RP?

Different gun for a different application. The BF's are designed for priming. How well they spray depends on the primer used and the nozzle size of the gun. Ideally 1.8-2.2 is what you want for most urethane surfacers, 2.5 if you spray polyester primer.

I've sprayed epoxy primer with the 100 B Rp 1.8.

You get quite a bit of build with it but you also get a bit of wave, hard to spray the epoxy really flat out of the 1.8 IMO.

The 100 B RP is an awesome primer gun for the regular 2K, Turbo and high build.

And like Chris said, the 5000 RP is not meant to be a primer gun, it is one of the best clear coat guns around.

i spray epoxy with my sata 4000 rp and it comes out like glass and i see all my imperfections

When you say primer, does epoxy count as a primer? I think I'm a little confused on the term primer and all that it encompasses.

I have a moderate compressor. I used to consider it big but after reading some of the air compressor setups here I'll consider it moderate. 16.8SCFM at 90 psi, 2 stage 175psi max with an 80 gallon tank.

Epoxy is a primer, but it has so many different uses depending on the application.

The epoxy is hard to spray smooth out of my SATA 100 B RP 1.8, Any other 2K primer the SATA works extremely well.
