SPI red basecoat

I noticed in the article you guys have on doing a perfect paint job you talk about some basecoats can be wetsanded before clear. I just bought some SPI red basecoat and was wondering if that can be wetsnaded before I put clear on it.

Just about any basecoat can be wet sanded to remove trash or imperfections. SPI is sandable. But it is always best to spray another coat of base before clearing. This will help eliminate sandscratches that may appear even in solid colors as well as eliminate possible thin spots in the base from sanding.

Some basecoats should not be sanded, Dupont Chroma Premiere and Chroma Base should never be sanded and I think they state this in their tech sheets. SPI's base and most others not a problem. It's common to denib and control any texture problems by sanding between coats, just make sure to apply a last coat before clear.

As Bob pointed out, you should check the tech sheets for what ever product you are using. The sanding base subject was discussed several years ago on another site. Evidently, according to some, some of the other bases contain some kind of "parafin wax" and this can cause a problem if sanded. If there is something that needs to be sanded out, I would not have a problem with doing that, but would spray another coat of base over that area before clearing. Even very fine sanding marks can show up in base if another coat is not applied.
