spray guns

does any one here prefer conventional guns?
its what i learned with, and there fore i seem to have some trouble maintaining distance with HVLP. perhaps it is because i only have one, a starting line, not a very good representation i am sure. also it is possible i never had enough air to it, as i have learned here, and from others, i need to only regulate at the gun. and likely more air than manufacture recommends.
i do have a brandy new in the box sharpe finex conventional. would you choose it or the finish line? should i just try both? i know i have tendency to hold any gun too far away. certainly too far away for HVLP.
i did not have trouble laying smooth with the old binks type years ago.........or was that the paint back then?

It's the worst call on the tech line I deal with!
"I was a full-time painter 30 years ago and want to restore my car and just bought a gun."
It took me a year to stop using my MBCs and JGA when I bought my first compliant gun
In my opinion, your starting line is your best gun
And with some practice, you will win as I bat about 95% helping people through this.

thanks Barry. i am certainly considering my user error and the fact that was spraying cheap paint.
i think if i can train my arm to spray closer instead of relying on muscle memory, it will work fine.
without getting too technical, what is the real difference between conventional and HVLP guns? passage ways bigger in hvlp? mechanically they cant be too much different?

The sharp transfer is 20 to 25%.
And complaiants range from 65 to some about 80%.
It is all about adjusting the gun and distance
The sharp was not a good gun as it over-atomized and had very inconsistent insides.

wow thats pretty bad. as far as numbers go.

My first gun was a Startingline 2 gun kit. It had a 1.4 and 1.8 tip and we ran everything through it from polyester primer (barely) to solvent based wood stain. It worked the best on single stage paints. It needs air volume more than pressure. 20-25 psi regulated at the gun depending on what you are spraying. For a base setting I would turn the fluid needle in all the way and then back it out 3 full turns, adjust the fan and then check the pressure, adjust from there. My next step was to a Graco Finex, then Tekna Prolite.
