Sprayed Epoxy on my MGB Project Today

I just sprayed SPI epoxy primer this weekend using a TP Tools Showtime turbine sprayer with their 1 quart Proline HVLP pressure gun and a 1.8 needle. I have had several people recommend Southern Polyurethanes products so I knew they were excellent but I was skeptical of the turbine sprayer. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily the paint went on with almost no overspray. Best of all, no runs! I don't want to sound like a commercial because this is the first time I have painted a car so I have no point of reference. But I couldn't be happier. I started the bodywork this evening. It is definitely not as easy as the TV shows make it look! I am using Rage Extreme filler over the epoxy but I am not clear about what I do when I sand through to the metal in a few spots. Should I spray another coat of epoxy to cover the filler and the bare metal spots? From what I understand, I need to spray a 2K sandable primer over everything when the bodywork is done then then a diluted epoxy over that as a sealer before spraying the base coat. Is that correct? Thanks for everything.

The body work and prep are the most important part of a great paint job.
Don't worry about sanding through to bare metal when working with your filler as everything should get another coat of epoxy to lock it down before spraying 2k or Polyester primer.
Use coarser grits to shape and straighten panels being sure not to press too hard on the sanding blocks throughout the entire process. Change your sandpaper often (as soon as it quits cutting) and spread your filler well beyond the area you are trying to level. You want plenty of room for feathering the repair.

I'll add to 68's good advice. The metal showing up while sanding the filler are high spots. If for any reason your filler is short and you know filler will remain on the bare metal you can spot prime the bare metal with epoxy, give it day min. (in 70+ temps.) to cure and apply more filler. Like 68 metioned use un-reduced epoxy over all the filler work. This is the point where you sand everything that needs to be surfaced like the epoxy that didn't need filler and apply more epoxy prior to 2k primer. It seals the filler and optimizes the intercoat adhesion between the epoxy and the 2k or poly primer. The reduced epoxy for sealer just prior to finish paint does the same thing, in addition to covering any small sand throughs and providing an even base for the paint.

Thanks for all the help. We sometimes forget how lucky we are to have such great information at our fingertips. I just ordered more epoxy and some 2K primer as suggested. This is the second time I have attempted to do bodywork. The first time was nearly 30 years ago and it was an absolute disaster! I believe patience comes with age because I have been taking my time with this project and have been very happy with the results so far. I will post my progress. Thanks again!

When using the turbine sprayer, did you just shoot 1:1 epoxy or did you add any reducer?

Looks good!

Funny that you bring this up because I just got off the phone and added reducer to my order! I sprayed it straight on the intitial coat. It was a little orange peely but not bad at all. It smoothed out nicely with 320but I am still going to reduce subsequent coats.
