Standox Deep Black

What should a gallon of Standox Deep Black cost? I just called the local jobber $403.90 for the base, and $110.20 for 5 liters of the MSB Reducer (it only comes in 5 liters). Am I just cheap, or are they gouging me?

He also told me to use my clear activator for the base. I'm using UV clear, is this good advice?

He asked what kind of clear I was using, and then talked to me like I'm some kind of an idiot using premium quality base with some "no-name" clear coat. :p

I really don't feel like buying from this place anyway, so does anyone have any suggestions (there aren't many DuPont jobbers around).

they are gouging imo,buy some Pro-spray Base Black,SPI Reducer and SPI clear Activator,Chad here on the boards can mix and ship to you!

i wouldnt pay that for Black Base maybe im Cheap, lol!!!!

Pro-Spray is great Quality IMO i use it everyday at my shop.

Best of luck Travis...

The pro-spray base is $175 a gallon if you buy the factory pack black..
Something like LY9B which has been very popular code is around $225.00
Seems like quite a difference.

sikkens 140 deep black tint is around 380 retail. so id say the standox is in line with the rest of the bigs at the high price.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Pro-Spray is pretty tempting at that price. Do you guys think it is a premium quality base, or is it more mid grade, but at a great value?

With black, what is going to be the difference of getting a factory pack vs a custom mix?

i think that is pretty much in line as well. rm has a few blacks and they are all around $350-380 a gallon. only time i use it is in a formula. if i am shooting something plain old black or doing an overall i will use hok bc-25. its the blackest base i have found, super quality and its $140 a gallon. prospray is good quality stuff as well.

sorry jim... i totally do not agree with u on hok black being black. u spray it out over saran wrap and its dark yellow. the only way to darken it up and make it deep is to add violet and oreintal candy. house of kolor knows this and on their new line comming out they are making a blacker black.

i used to think hok was a deep black.. but a few years black i tried to spot hok over sem black because i ran out of sem.. and u can see the spot.. its brown and the blend area is spotty. and its full coverage.

since sem color horizons black is getting hard to find... ppg 9700 is pretty good. sikkens/lesonal has a really good black toner that makes a nice black. and the others listed im sure are good too.

i have yet to try the sem stuff. many of the blackest bases will spray looking brown as $hit. rm's factory packaged black d403 which is supposed to be their blackest black is extremely brown when sprayed, way more than hok. the hok is every bit as black as that or blacker. with that said, i'm sure there are bases out there that are blacker. i know you have always said the sem stuff is good so i don't disagree with you one bit. everything sem i have used has been really good stuff.

i'm not sure if they still have it, but at one time sikkens had a jet black which was blacker than the 140 deep black. couldn't tell a difference unless you had one of those expensive sunlights shining on both panels side by side...but the jet was "blacker" with the sunlight it turned the 140 a little gray...while the jet stayed black.

usually you are going to find the deepest/blackest black as a factory pack / straight toner, but most banks have a few different blacks for mixing purposes. never used the spi black but kinda wish barry would bring it back to sit along side the red!

a little blue in the mix helps kill the brown. i also try to shoot black on very low humidity days. helps a bunch as it will absorb some moisture which will brown it up some just like cheap reducer will. still using ppg for the black ones.

Shine,

Do you use PPG factory pack black, or some other code? Right now I'm thinking of going with PPG or Pro-Spray. Have you ever used Pro-Spray?

used prospray on the 56 210. really liked it. was going to order some base but we were in town for lunch thur so i stopped and got a gal of black toner base . i make customers buy their own paint and materials now days. they find out quick what it cost.

they have to buy lunch too... :)

lol, i like the ones who say "well i can get the paint" thinkin that the cost is gonna come down. i just smile and tell them the cost just doubled. usually puts them in their place. i have NO problems showing them my paint bills and tell them striaght up, if they can get it cheaper even with my markup (which is almost nothing), then go ahead but there is ZERO warranty and the price doubles.

i buddy of mine just used pro-spray yesterday in my booth to do a 69 mustang. burnt orange factory color...seemed to cover and spray great. hes been using glasurit for years and said he was pleased with it. first time he used it so he was kinda on the fence...only thing he said about it was that it was kinda thin. sealing the car would have done wonders...BUT even in sikkens some of the oranges i've sprayed are a bit thin..just as yellow is. and thats the case for a lot of other companies.

i supply part numbers or a list of materials. i no longer order anything. they can buy their parts and when it is wrong they can deal with the vendors . by the time they have bought everything from epoxy to polish they have a better idea what is involved.

the prospray did really well on the 56. it was med brite blue metallic and code 16 silver. performed as well as ppg . i will use it again .

When i built my shop it was either rm or prospray that was going in here. Only reason i picked rm was their color chip system and formulas are way more extensive. A nicer setup and longervhistory. It wasnt because i saw a quality difference in the paint itself.

first paint i ever used was r-m lacquer . used it at autobahn motors doing uro cars. has always been a good product just not so flashy .

try mixing in oriental and violet.. it kills the sepia tone to it. i only use sem black as an example.. as i can only get my hands on a few solvent blacks... sem.. hok.. matrix.. and limco.. so if i had a choice to get other solvent black.. they would be alot lower on the list. as i prefer ppg and sikkens black.
