sunmight supplier

i recently found a good supplier for sunmight. they have the lowest prices i can find and they ship fast. since sunmight can be a little harder to find i thought i would post the link. i have completely switched over from the eagle yellow film to the sunmight 1000 and 1500 film discs. they dont cut quite as fast but they last atleast 2-3 times as long and cheaper to buy. for my regular discs i switched over to the sunmight ceramic discs. these seem to be sunmights answer to cubitron. these are the same deal. they dont cut quite as fast BUT they just keep going and going without loading up. they are unbelievable really. priced about the same as 3m gold but last about 10 times as long. probably the best paper i have ever used. i was using 320 mirka gold that got sent to me by mistake. what took aprox 10-12 discs i can do with just 1 disc of the sunmight ceramic. crazy stuff.

finishingfocus.com

they do have a sale going on, 15% off sunimght with code sun15 but i think it ends today.

@Jim C Jim did you say that the gold and the green film were the same abrasive? I've used a lot of the green film but would like to switch to the paper backing for some grits because of the stiffness of the film stuff.

chris, yes i believe so. i have not seen any difference between gold and green as far as how long it lasts, cut speed, loading, etc. seems to me its just the backing. the gold is good. the green and the ceramic stuff is all film. if you are looking for finishing film then the green is the only thing available in the higher grits

yes for roll paper i do like gold a little better simply because i like to tear it off the roll. the green stuff you have to cut it with a razor blade. i dont do alot of blocking anymore but i can see the gold working better on soft blocks. the finishing film for the da seems to cut flatter. takes a little more of the urethane wave out

@JIM I only have experience with 600 ceramic, but it cut better than lower grits, and left a smoother finish than upper grits, along with lasting longer. Is that what you find with all ceramic grits, or was I just having a good day?

the sunmight ceramic is on the same level as the 3m cubitron. i have found that the ceramic cut speed seems to be a little slower but it last a crazy long time and i have very little clogging if at all. the stuff just keeps going and going.

I was thinking in terms of the quality of the cut, instead of speed, maybe thats the same thing. 600 would cut almost like 400 and leave a finish like 800, I was polishing rotating SS bolt heads. I have some different grits ordered so I guess I'll try it out.

Yeah im not really sure when it comes to that. I would only be able to tell if i was shooting a metallic on it which i dont really do anymore

Just checked the paper I was using, its not ceramic, its a sheet of silicon carbide. 3M makes it in 9x11 and smaller sheets. 3M wet or dry is also silicon carbide, but they must not be making it anymore.
This is a bit expensive but if anyone wants to try it, you can get unnamed rolls at McMaster Carr.

3M™ Wetordry™ Paper Roll 431Q is a silicon carbide Wetordry™ roll constructed on a C-weight, paper backing. It can be run wet or dry for hand or machine sanding a wide range of substrates.

Still a Favorite
Still a favorite among our customers for its reduced clogging, long life and great finish, 3M™ Wetordry™ Paper Roll 431Q is a good general use abrasive for hand or mechanical sanding on a wide range of substrates from paint, primer and gel coat to metal and wood.

3M™ Wetordry™ Paper Roll 431Q

Roll 431Q is available in a variety of grades, including 100, 120, 150, 180, 240, 320, 400, 60, 600 and 80
Sharp Mineral for a Smooth Finish
We chose silicon carbide for this 3M product. Silicon carbide is second only to diamond in hardness. This mineral's grain is sharp and narrow and easily fractures. The benefit of this "friability" is that fresh, sharp edges are continuously exposed to the work surface. They cut extra fast and produce a smooth, professional-looking finish. Silicon carbide abrasives are commonly used for low-pressure applications such as paint prep and finishing on wood and metal. While the mineral has a shorter life than aluminum oxide, it produces a superior finish.

3M Proprietary Waterproof Backing
Used dry or with water, our 3M™ Wetordry™ Paper Roll 431Q abrasive enables you to rinse areas of the workpiece and the abrasive during use. This prevents dust and debris from clogging the face of the abrasive and reduces air-borne dust, while cooling and lubricating the workpiece and producing a faster cut. It has the additional advantage of extending abrasive life.

Our 3M™ Wetordry™ Paper Roll 431Q is backed with a 3M-patented durable waterproof paper backing. Lighter weight than cloth and smooth rather than textured, a paper backing works better for lighter applications like finishing and paint prep. At the same time, many of these applications produce a significant amount of dust, clogging the abrasive points and creating an inferior work environment. These effects can be minimized by sanding with water to rinse dust away.

Recommended Applications
This versatile abrasive roll is ideal for use on surfaces that tend to generate a lot of dust, such as paint and primer, and can also be used dry for finishing metal and gel coats. In the marine industry 431Q abrasive media is used for sanding old finishes, fine feather edging, and surface work.

Engineered to Improve the Process from Beginning to End
We engineered our 3M™ Wetordry™ Paper Roll 431Q abrasive to improve the sanding process from beginning to end. This abrasive makes the sanding processes easier. It's made to cut fast and endure wet sanding so jobs that generate dust don't fatigue it. It's made to generate a great finish. It's another way that 3M helps you get the most from your operations.
