Tape out a run.

I get this call a lot; first coat of clear, and I have a run.

This is the one area if a painter has never taped out a run before; it is worth the time on a scrap fender to practice doing, as it is a money maker when you have the procedure down--I'm an expert on runs, so I'm good at this, and most of the time the next day you will not find the run.

Say we have a 3inch run in the door, right away get some 3/4 inch tape and rip off a 6-inch piece, hold each end of the tape with both hands and bend the center of the tape toward the car, stick the tape to the highest point of the run with strictly, the pressure of the tape and pull off.
Get a new piece of tape and do the next high point; keep doing it till the area is level with the rest of the clear, and all you see are the tape marks.

Let flash and then spot a medium coat of clear over the spot, let flash or I lightly blow air on it out of the gun for a few minutes, do another medium coat of clear, let flash, and finish clearing the door with two more coats.

It is essential to let the clear flash, or it will run again.

It should look just a little rough at this point, but tomorrow may be gone or just a lite sanding with 1500 and a buff will take care of it.
 
Can do the same thing with a bug or piece of trash that lands in the clear. (use the sticky side) depending on how big or how much it embeded into the clear though.. Once the bug/trash is out, keep dabbing it to smooth the clear up a little and do the same steps above with recoating and flashing (use non sticky side and new piece of tape).

*edit* depends on the bug also! might be better to just use a pick as the bugs just like to fall apart once they hit the clear. tape method works good on very small ones.

I'm not normally negative - but i think it is sad that i have not even started spraying and am researching how to fix runs :eek:

No, that means you have a positive attitude and you are going to hammer the thing and runs be damn.

Give me a run and I will laugh, give me any orange peel or dryness and the DA is going to come out and were starting over.
 
remember john kosmoski saying at one of his seminars. "If there isn't a run someone on the car, you aren't trying to make it slick!" Can't do nothing with dryspray other than repaint......UNLESS it's on the 4th coat of clear and its a very small area.

Have to admit I've used the tape trick over the years with success. Before I go for the tape there is an uncontrollable string of very nasty, foul words coming from my mouth that do nothing to fix the run but helps vent the anger. Man I hate runs.
A comparison to laying on the clear:
It's like busting loose a race car in a turn...untill you lose it you don't know where the edge is.

Nice job JC, just remember, SPI did not charge you for the run we put in that can of clear, just another VALUE added item, when using SPI.

You have to watch some of that stuff. A ferw years ago I got a gallon of the black epoxy that was full of dents. Thought I would never get rid of them. LOL

Well then I'm really getting my money's worth.
It's always hard for me going from real hot weather to cold weather when it switches real fast.
Takes a while for me to adjust accordingly.

The black definetly has more dents in it than the white.
 
I have sprayed a lot of different clears in the last 16 years and have gotten runs in just about all of them. But I have found that when I get a run in any of the SPI clears i have shot (U.C., Euro, Production 2.1) that they seem to sand and buff out better than other brands I have tried. I haven't noticed any ghosting on the runs as I had gotten in the past. JMHO
