tiger striping

I first sprayed the car with epoxy induced half an hour thru a 1.4 tip lvlp gravity feed. Very minor in the roof. After filler I induced epoxy overnight and sprayed with a 1.7 tip titan vaper and had some tiger striping I guess you would call it on the roof only. I then applied 2k (same 1.7 gun) and again it tiger striped on the roof only. I assume this striping is from the gun not being held completely parallel to the roof panel but I don't know that if I did I wouldn't have paint leaking from the paint cup lid or if it would even feed. I guess what I am asking is; is what I am doing causing this and if so what is it and how do I correct it? Also will b/c be tad more forgiving in this area or no?

Thanks

Without seeing the car, I would guess one of (or a combination of) these things is causing your problem: You could be holding the gun tilted slightly, (not parallel) causing it to be applied heavier on half of the pattern, you may not be getting enough overlap causing light application between passes, you may need to either fan the pattern out more.

Also, make sure the air cap and needle are clean, it doesn't take much build up at all to cause the pattern to spray heavy on one side. You can check by spraying thinner through the gun and looking at the pattern. If it is heavy on top or bottom, flip the air cap 1/2 turn and see if it sprays heavier on the opposite side. If it does that air cap is dirty. If it continues to spray heavy on the same side as prior to rotating the cap, it is likely a problem with the fluid needle, either dirty or bent.

Any of those will cause stripping, and the base coat and clear coat will no be more forgiving than the primer, if anything they will be less forgiving especially if it is a metallic color. The gun will feed and should not leak if the cap is on properly even holding it parallel to a flat surface. If you are worried about the gun leaking, paint the side first then go to the top, that way the gun would not be as full. I hope this help you figure things out. I would recommend getting the primer to spray without striping before moving onto paint.

Excellent getting primer right was my plan. Its much cheaper and easier to work with a screw up than the base I assume. Thanks for your help will do.
