Two Tone Paint Tips

2

There is no thread catagory for graphics. I hope this is an Ok spot, and someone can answer my question. I'm getting ready to spray a two tone paint scheme, top will be HOK limegold , bottom will be SPI black basecoat. The car is completely sealed in White SPI Epoxy. I was thinking of spraying the lighter color limegold on the top down slightly past the belt line which is the color change point. There is no moulding to cover the color change line. I would then mask over the top color on the belt line and spray black on down. If I mask 1st I would get a white pinstripe. I assume spraying the black over a few inches of Limegold is Ok?

This is my project: belt line is just below windows

Thanks, Mark

assuming that the lime gold you are referring to is just their basecoat that would work good, and using a black on the bottom of the 2-tone should work good because it should cover fast which means you shouldn't get to big of a tape line.

If the color you are using is going to get a candy, that's a different subject, but from what you are saying i don't think that is the case.

HOK lime gold pearl PBC53 is (Pearl Base Coat ?) should be Ok. I think

I really miss Jim C's graphics tutorial from the old board.

if u mask first over the white with fineline and leave it and shoot the above and below color ull have a hite pinstripe.. if u dont want that, shoot the gold first. then put a coat of sg100 or spi intercoat over it protect from tape tracking damaging the mica. then shoot ur black. black has the least build edge, so i shoot black last. for most graphics, if black is shot last, u can almost always get away with one clear session. does that about cover it?

Would I spray the entire top with sg100, or just the belt line area to be taped on?

I had a bad expireince with sg100 the 1st time I used it. It sprayed funny and got all mottled on me somehow. I'm a little hesitant/afraid to try it again and ruin something.

I felt like I hit a gold mine with finding a gallon of unopened SPI black basecoat. I forgot all about it. It is the "blackest" black I've ever used.

i agree with everyone here. you dont need to cover the entire top with intercoat. just do it anywhere tape will be sitting on the limegold base. i am no fan of sg100 either of course i have made that no big secret. use spi's or most any other major paint brand will have a clear base as well.

mix the sg100 1 to 1 next time. and spray it meduim. ull never have a problem. i use mostly sg100 as intercoat. as far as spraying the whole area? i would. its cheap insurance. then u can wipe the crap out of the job and not worry about damaging the color. do as u wish. if u want something to wipe down with. ive been using sprayway glass cleaner... its deonized water and alcohol. its perfect for wiping down basecoat with.

Jim,
Any chance you have a copy of the "Graphics 101" tutorial you did on sport bike painting from the old board? I had it bookmarked for reference with this job in mind. My bookmark dissappeared when the board when down. I loved that thread. I tried to find it but it's gone.

Sik,
Thanks for the tips! I'll try that.

Thats probably a good idea and a hell of alot cheaper than kc-20.

ya i dont even own kc20. ive always used upol with the pink label waterbased wax and grease, and now have been using sprayway. its good shit, give it a try.

This may be a silly question. Can I use U-POL clearcoat blender as intercoat to protect bare basecoat pearls from taping damage?

2stroke, SPI's intercoat is the way to go-gives you a nice surface to tape on without worry of damaging the pearl basecoat, also cleans easily like Sik and Jim suggested.
Sik, I know someone else that uses the Spray-way glass cleaner-he's been using it as a final prepaint cleaner for years without problem.

it works great. its cheap, and its in aerosal form. cant beat that. i cant put the stuff down. i do alot of airbrushing and graphic work, so i the majority of the time i base something it sits longer then a day. so after backmasking, masking and spraying, i like to have something to wipe down the panel with.

another thing i do to, many will disagree. i use normal paper towels to wipe stuff down with. im pretty wasteful as is, and theres nothing like wasting money on paper towels. the worst case scenario is that i have to use a tack cloth more. i picked this up from a friend/mentor of mine. he used to have a production bike painting deal for a company, and he said of all materials, seeing the nice towels wasted was a major $$$ problem.

Do you get "Spray-Way" areosol glass cleaner at the local grocery store?

Sik, I'm suprised you don't get lint contamination

Van got some color today

i have never heard of that perticular brand but i have always used the kc-20 and for years i have been saying it was nothing but over priced ammonia free glass cleaner. the whole point of glass cleaner is to clean without leaving a residue so it does make sense.

I also use regular paper towels to wipe off the SPI Waterborne Wax & Grease Remover. In my garage it comes in an aerosol can - a cheap one from Harbor Freight:

get lint, but i just tack it off. its worth the savings.

lol for small amounts of paint and clear i use paper cups. the wax free. 3oz. and 22oz. i do alot of small color graphics and clear small parts. so i mix up tiny amount. i will use those nice 3oz paper cups that come graduated if i need an extact measurement. but for a 1 to 1 mix or or a 4 to 1 mix its pretty simple. i was taught the proper way when i was in school, but learned the hack (i dont really think its hack more like thrifty way) afterwards. lol.

there are other variants, id stick with this can.... its about 3.50 and i get it at the local jobber, or auto parts store.
