Except I practice It.

All colors have an optimal gray shade that will help obtain the illusion of coverage with the fewest possible coats. I will look up the gray shade by color code for anyone who wants it. Typical for silver is a fairly light gray.

Using black as an undercoat for silver is misguided, especially for large metallic which tends to cover very poorly compared to fine metallic.
