UV over OE Clear

Is it possible to scuff the existing OE clear coat and spray UV over it? I wanted to color sand my an '08 Ford but I'm not to sure about the thickness of the OE clear. Oh and it's a grey metallic color. I figured as long as I don't scuff into the color, it should be ok?

Thanks

do it! Just sand it with 600 grit or scuff it up with a grey scotchbrite and scuff paste and shoot your clear.

that's great! Ford must have the worst case of orange peel when it comes to trucks. I've had GM trucks that look decent, but the F250 is horrible. Looks like I sprayed it ;).

i dont know why a lot of people dont do this? especially the ones who say they are picky with their cars.......i cant stand the orange peel on these new cars..drives me INSANE. especially when some of these high end auto makers tout their paint jobs as special. kills me when i see some of these bmws around town and orange peel from one end to the other.

let me deliver a paint job with orange peel all in it, and i get ripped a new one.

I always though it would be cool to set up a program with local dealerships to detrim, scuff clear, apply 3 coats of clear and cut and buff..assemble and give back. a "showroom finish" option......but i guess no one really wants that when paying 50-60k for a brand new top of the line car? thats what the target customer would be.

might sound stupid to a lot of people to take a part a brand new car i but i believe its worth it.

actually one of the european car makes offers the two step clear as an option, funny how the factory also needs to do the clear/sand/reclear deal to get it right even with robotics and all the technology available.

some of the factory clear on 40K cars ,with orange peel you can see from 50 ft away drives me crazy. i wouldn never pay that price for a car with that kind of finish...

Kent,

Reason you don't want to wet sand the original finish and buff, is because it is so thin from the factory any loss of mils will make the paint deteriorate faster.

We just had a guy buy two new hemi cudas and wanted Daniels restorations wet sand and buff, after talking with the owner he had Daniel wetand with 800 and slam four coats of clear on each one. UniversaL OF COURSE!

Two weeks ago on a Sunday evening, wife wanted a ride in the vette, I was to tired, so said only if we can go and look at new vettes and Camaros.
I could not believe what I saw, the Camaros, looked like they were painted with aerosol cans and the vettes were not as bad but totally disgusting.

Yes, JB, paint one like that and tray to get the customer to pay you a $1000, LOL I would love to be there, when you tried to deliver that car!

lol amazing right?

a good customer of mine bought a new gmc truck a few months ago, black.

i see him just about everyday, and the truck. i've spotted multiple flaws in the paint since he's had it. i think it's had a dealer or factory repaint on the right side best i can tell. theres specs of trash here and there on the right side..not to mention the peel.

aint no way in hell i could deliver him a paint job that had even the minute piece of trash in it! he wouldn't pay me $100! lol .

Look at any new BMW, especially the black ones. Worst paint I have seen in a long time only to be matched by some GM products. How they can sell a 70k plus car with paint quality like that only reinforces my belief that many people really can't spot quality work in any form.
