Phoenix

Since I want this to be a show car ,this is what I think should be done but im no pro painter so please correct me as I go.

I want a mirror glass finish. The car will be F150 blue similar to Impreza blue. The epoxy I got is black. Car is part metal part fiberglass , bare , no gelcoat.

1-rough sand to 150
2-epoxy to seal (coats?)
3-sand to apply filler (grit?)
4-apply filler very minimal
5-2k primer (coats?)
6-sand & block to 600-800
7-epoxy to sandwich everything (coats?)
8-sand & block to 600-800
9-color (coats?)
10-Universal clear (coats?)
11-wet sand & polish

Please correct me if im wrong and fill me up with the grits and coats.

thanks

#2 = Two wet coats.
#3 = do not sand apply filler after 24 hours up to 7 days.
#5 = 99% of shops use 3 coats to 2k primers for block sanding.
#6 = Blocking is always 180.
#10 = your choice 4 coats or three coats and wetsand and 3 more.

If you want it to be a mirror finish plan on shooting 2K and blocking several times. In other words repeating steps 5 and 6 several times.

On #9 you need to shoot a test panel to find out how many coats brings you to full hide. You also need to check what the undercoat sealer color is so you get the correct color you are looking for in your basecoat.

On number 5 , as barry said , do I need to buy the regular 2k spi or the high build?

Does the high build equals 2 coats of regular?

It all depends on how much filling properties you need. SPI Regular build is equal to many major brands high build. Either way you go hopefully you will be sanding a ton of it off. If you require a really heavy build primer you may want to turn to a poly primer like Slick Sand.

there is no reason to block to 800 . get your filler work done then then at least one good coat of epoxy. let cure for about 48 hrs then do 2 coats of slicksand. block with 180 and repeat if you have to.block down as much as possible . you can scuff over the 180 with 220 or so just to knock down the scratch some but 180 will seal off .
