What Paint for the Interior?

W

Wildthing

Hi. ...was going to leave Epoxy Black on the exposed portions of the interior then I read where the Epoxy chalks at exposure to UV. What paint should I use for the interior (On top of the SPI epoxy?)?

It's usually about a 20% gloss on dash and interior trim to keep glare down. What car and year?

I bet the epoxy will hold up for a long time before chalking, and even then only the surface will be compromised. Two coats of satin black urethane singlestage can get you the same look but with better scratch resistance (if it's a quality paint) and good UV resistance.

Thanks for the responses.

68 Fastback Mustang I am rebuilding to be a daily driver. ...on the satin black urethane, do I just get it from PPG or something? Does it spray the same as the SPI Epoxy?

PPG concept works good, and they can mix it up in any shade of black you want. If you like the looks of the spi epoxy black you'll want the singlestage to be mixed in a brown shade of black. Do a test panel before you spray the interior and let it cure overnight to verify it ends up at the gloss level you want, if it ends up to shiney you can have more flattener added or use a faster reducer. SEM also offers a urethane satin black that might work for you and save some $ http://sem.ws/Catalog.asp?prod=270. DuPont, Akzo Nobel, Pro Spray.... most paint companies offer singlestage that will work.

Thank you for the link Bob. I think I will go with the SEM.

My build link is here:

I am most concerned about screwing up the painting part of this project (I currently have both quarters off :) but I am determined to do it myself...

Thanks to everyone on this thread!

Will, if you can lay down a nice coat of black epoxy you won't have any trouble with single stage black. The only downfall of a satin paint is you can't sand and buff any imperfections out so it needs to be nice out of the gun. Shoot your first coat and allow it to tack up to the point that the paint will still be tacky but won't string up when you lift your finger (test on a masked area) then shoot your second coat. 2 coats is fine for that application 3 if you feel the need for more.

If I remember correctly the color is called Charcoal Black Poly 32586. It's PPG's DDL Acrylic Lacquer. It's really nice when it's done, as it's not just a black but you can really see the grey, silver black metallic in it. I sprayed two reduced coats of epoxy followed by 2-3 coats of DDL. If you cannot get a quart by let me know and I can still get it locally , at least I could a couple months ago when I sprayed mine.
I'm doing a 69 mustang but I believe the Charcoal black went back a few more years.
