Which clear to use and will it work.

I am doing my 67 GTO in Viper Red. Now the PPG paint is around $150 a quart. And I figure I would need around 7 quarts.(all jambs, trunk, and hood insides)
I am planning now to use Summit Viper Red which is much cheaper.
Which clear would be best to use over this basecoat and are they compatible.
I have heard great things about the SPI product line and want to give them a try.
I have been painting cars and have owned a collision shop back in the 1980's. The last car I painted was around 2001 so the prices have jumped alot since the last car I painted.

The Universal clear would be fantastic over the PPG.

SPI has no products compatible with the summit paint and would recommend you use their whole system, if that is the way you want to go.

no way i'd use the summit paint. dont let the cheap price get to you. if you are looking for a lower price use pro-spray..talk to chad on here and he'll set you up. Yes the $150 is high, but it is a high quality basecoat and you wont have any problems. the summit is not and cant say that you wont have any problems.

I have about $800 for basecoat and clear. SPI clear will fill the bill, but I need the basecoat. I have everything I will need for primers, but if I need epoxy I will go with the SPI brands.

Is that 7 quarts of base figured as being "non-reduced". Sure seems like a lot of base. I just did a 73 Mustang Convertible in Pro-Spray Performance Red. I shot 3 coats on it over white epoxy sealer and got full coverage. I actually think I had full coverage at 2 coats, but wanted to be sure. I shot inside the hood, trunk, doors, and all jambs, and only used a little over 2 qts. I know that mine was a convert, but the roof would not take 5 quarts.

You are dealing with RED, so the prices are going to be higher, but check Pro-Spray.

I got a price on PPG omn i and it is comparable to the summit paint, so I won't be using that. Also thew guy at the paint store said the Omni should be good as long as I use a good clear. Which clear will work with the Omni paint.

Not on a GTO!!!! And red of all colors, no way, red is the worst for fading.

Here are some good options, check the prices.

Prospray
Metalux
Lesional

The above are low cost but will perform as well as the high dollar grades.

Does prospray have a site I can go to.

Will the clear work with the Omni if I go that route.

540, Listen to what the others and Barry are saying. Some colors you can get away with using a lower grade basecoat, if you basecoat activate and cut with a high quality reducer. But red is not one of those colors! I have seen some cheap basecoats colors completely fade out in less than a year even with SPI's Universal clear over it. Don't chance it, especially with a GTO!

You've come here for advice, it would be best to listen the these people....they speakum the truth, and you will be sorry with the 2 routes you have chosen

O.K. you guys convinced me. I will be going for the PPG DBU. I've always used PPG. But the price seemed high and the money for the project is a little tight. But I will dig up the extra cash. Now which is the best SPI clear for this and I am used to painting Corvettes and really don't know how much paint to buy for this car. It has a vinyl top and I will be doing the jambs and the inside of the trunk lid. Thanks for your help guys and I will be calling for the clear as soon as I get the base.

DBC then. Got them confused. I have a thousand things going on today.

Just a thought....Glasurit paints are priced the same for ALL colors. I.e. red is the same price as black. A gallon of single stage (22 line) is about $450 (about $170 for activator)and gallon will cover your entire car inside and out with 2 medium coats. This paint covers anything in 2 coats......wait overnight and do 2 or 3 coats of clear....you'll have a very durable paint system.

Most here would say the Universal. Here's my take:
Universal or Euro2020.
Universal if you want to be able to sand and buff easily months later.
Euro2020 if you plan on sanding and buffing within 7-10 days and want more upfront scratch resistance.
There are a lot of other factors to consider, but if a gun were put to my head this would be my quick answer.

Go with the Universal clear.. Its the easiest of them all and more error proof for at home painters.. Its a very forgiving clear.. More forgiving than the Euro would be, especially if you waited to buff..

If you are inexperienced in buffing I would definitely go with the universal no matter what
