Which goes bad first?

I don't do a lot of fiberglass work but occasionally a job will call for it. The fiberglass resin and hardener will sit on the shelf for 1 to 3 years before I need it and it always gives a problem when I try to use it. It just won't get hard (no, this is not a sex therapy question!). I bought new hardener (NAPA) and tried that with the old resin but it still will not set up. Can the fiberglass resin go bad? I hate to buy a quart when all I need is about 3 tablespoons. Thanks

I replace MEKP catalysts that are over one year old. I have not experienced resin going bad, what you describe seems odd. I would check the date on the newer catalysts, maybe they have been on the shelf too long at the store.

yes the resin definately goes bad. usually it hardens on its own though. i guess if it doesn't it would give you a situation where it would not kick off.

Thanks, guys. It was the resin. The new hardener had no effect on the old resin but it did kick the new resin exactly as it was supposed to. Any tips to prolong the useful life of the leftover resin (almost a full quart)?

I run a marine refinish shop for the last few yrs since i quit the bodyshop and i hate using any resin or hardner after 6 months of it being open. Since i use it everyday i can really tell when it starts to age. You would think we would use it quick enough but 45 gallons is alot of resin when u stock 3 different types. Most likely aslong as it cures hard you won't have any problems with it, and if it stays a lil sticky on the surface thats just the wax coming to the top just wipe with acetone and sand very well.
