Als Bedliner

I've searched around, but cannot find much info as to why the SPI Bedliner went away, other than the price of the GeoGun.
What did I miss?

I talked to a friend of mine and sending him my formula this week and he will look at and may start making, if he does, I will post.

That would make for some happy campers , myself included!

Did you get the hopper gun and the spray can with the film that lets the coating peel off the hopper and gun parts after it dries?

Was in HF today and spotted this hopper gun. Looks like an exact match for the one included in the Al's kit, even has three different sized nozzles - at about half the price.

Well we spayed Al's bedliner tonight on my son's new F150. Mixing went fine but no instructions on how much rubber crumb to use.and we mixed in the whole container so it came out REALLY bumpy. Even though the mixing jug has enough room to mix all the components, there's not enough room to mix in the jug of rubber crumb so you have to mix in as much as you can, put some in the hopper and then mix the rest of the rubber crumb in. Luckily I sprayed SPI black epoxy on the bed last night (there were a lot of bare metal spots after sanding) as I'm not sure how well the bedliner would have covered the silver. There really wasn't enough material for extra coverage and barely had enough to do a 6-1/2' box and tailgate. Overall it's ok, but am concerned how durable the rubber crumb will be and hope the crumbs don't flake off over time.. The adhesion promoter was joke, the bottle didn't spray right and left a lot of heavy droplets that took a long time to dry. The spray gun was sketchy and as suspected the hopper popped off during spraying (I was ready for it). Luckily I was holding it with two hands and only spilled a little on the bed floor. Hopefully there's plenty of thickness, it's hard to tell.

That would be nice, since I have an uncompleted job that has the bed bottom covered in SPI bedliner, and right now we finally got around to putting a new floor in the cab. We'll be needing something that looks close.

Barry, that would be really appreciated.

This Sem seems fine and looks like yours but during demasking you can tear the oversprayed tape like nothing. Your's acted like it had kevlar reinforcement. Difference might not amount to anything but I'd sure use your formula first.

Arrowhead, I don't think I'd like that stuff. Would be fine in a Saturday Night Special but I'd hate to clean the oil and grease out of it after hauling an old engine or trans.

Understood, I had no idea what the final result would look like or if it was any good, just went with with it because of reviews here and online so I thought I would post the results. As far as it being a rough texture, that what my son wanted as he's a welder so it will be used for carying tools and equipment more than things that would spill. Also the rubbery texture was important for walking on and having a non slip surface.

Sprayed the underside of a 8' bed yesterday with SEM Rock-it. It's a little cheaper than the Sem Pro-tex. It's a relatives truck and he picked it up at the local jobber. I told him to get 2 kits because one just isn't enough. Jobber talked him into 1 kit. It did the job but barely. This is the bottom of the box so a lot less square footage. 2 kits would have been nice with plenty of coats and thickness. Everything is covered but not how I'd do it. It's a grainy style texture that is rock hard. Reminds me of the old Body Schultz style texture.

We bought 3 of the last kits from SPI to do inside the bed. He bought 2 and I bought 1 for my hoarding shelf. I have a feeling he might be into the 3rd by the time the tailgate is done. I used to use 2 SPI kits for a short bed. I didn't feel that the mils were very thick either. No where near as thick as the Line X in my own truck.

I've used SEM pro-tex on a Porsche interior last fall and it's characteristics are very similar to SPI. I'd still buy SPI if they made it but I'm happy with this stuff.

I'm just about to buy a kit of SEM Pro-Tex bed liner. The kit doesn't come with a gun.

I still have the GEO gun I got from Barry. Can I use that for spraying the Pro-Tex?

Also, in the instructions for Pro-Tex, it says it can be sprayed over epoxy but it must be cured and sanded with 180. Can I get good adhesion if I spray the SPI epoxy one day and then the Pro-Tex the next day with no sanding? Or should I just do what SEM recommends?

Barry, Is your friend interested in pursuing the bed liner business?

I'm glad to see this discussion taking place. We have experience with SPI bedliner as well as U-Pol Raptor. Raptor is a nice product and very easy to use, but I can't comment on the durability yet. The SPI definitely has a much higher quality "feel" to the finish product as it is thicker and more flexible. I am getting ready to coat the truck bed in my F350 and am really not sold at any other product as I was with the SPI bedliner. I was sad to see it gone from the product offerings.

I personally do not like the raptor.. I tend to use the higher end SEM liner when I need to use it. Or for wheel wells and under beds I will use Rock-It liner but I consider it to be more of a activated undercoating.

This thread is a bit old, but for those of you that are still looking for bed-liner, I have been searching for a new product since SPI is no longer available and this stuff seems to be getting a lot of good buzz from the Jeep and 4x4 community. Its called Monsta-liner (http://www.monstaliner.com) and its a roll-on product, which at first scared me. But the more I read and saw on Jeep and Land Rover forums, the better it sounded. I haven't tried it yet, but based on all I seen and heard, I am going to use it over the winter on an old pickup (bed and under body) I am working on.

PS = I've used the SPI and SEM stuff and both have worked great.

Thanks for sharing Mike, we need to keep this thread going. Hopefully we will come up with something thats close to SPI Bedliner. Please let us know how it goes. Im wondering if anyone has tried to spray it thru one of the guns like Barry sold.

I have used the 3M 7277 auto body coating. It is epoxy based and sticks well.
