I got a quote yesterday to do my 30x50x12 at 4500$. He recommended 3-4 inch of open cell for the roof and 1 inch closed on the walls, and 2 inch closed on the west wall. Says he been doing it 30yrs and recommended open cell on roof because he can go much thicker at a cheaper cost......debating.
I am far from an expert but I worry about condensation forming with open cell on a steel building. I have seen closed cell followed by open cell to prevent condensation.

This company has big contracts with the chemical plants over here and doesn't advertise residential stuff. He gave me the "I can do whatever you want but I'm telling you what works and what I have in my own shop" speech.

As I said I’m not an expert. My neighbor had open cell sprayed on his shop roof. It separated in large sections. What a mess, contractor repaired the separated sections with closed cell. Looks awful.

Trust no one. Open cell is trash. Don't put that on your roof.

"Pros" in contracting, always like to give the most profitable opinion. A second from a "pro" may be the same.
Outside of potentially trapping moisture. What are the down sides?...3x as thick...and less cost..?
Open cell is 2 pound, closed cell is 5 pound. I would imagine per cubic foot or yard, not sure. That means open cell is exactly that, Open air bubbles and less material.
Closed cell is denser foam, thus the weight difference. When you're dealing with hot sun, that's where you need the good stuff.

I agree. I'm just looking for options. Just wonder if open cell is bad, then why is it even a thing. Like what are the pro and con

I had them spray open cell between my floors and ceilings between floors to muffle the noise. My basement walls and rim boards are closed cell. Basement is dry and toasty. Closed cell acts as a vapor barrier as well.

TMI dash pad and VHX gauges installed. Took some time to install the vents since the holes were undersized. Working on carpet installation. Dash had been butchered to install a single DIN radio. Had to do some reverse butchery to install a stock style radio. Learned that the ashtray assembly can’t be installed from behind when vintage air evaporator is installed.

New steering wheel and shifter knob coming.

Waiting on a hood latch pin. Owner drove over the original hood and tossed it in the trash. :D. Had an entertaining oscillation in the fuel pump controller that required the addition of a fuel pressure damper. Holley EFI runs great now. 800 hours total in the build.
