Iwata purple cap users...my base is mottled

I have never been a pro with metallics, I am unsure why but i struggled with the iwata for metallics, now i use a walcom geo, and it made a huge difference for me, must be something about the way I spray.. Although i wouldn't even know where to get one of these guns now.

I did find some faint stripes in the direction of my gun travel after getting it out in the sun! I guess I needed more light in the booth!

iwatas arent the easiest to lay down a nice metallic. hence the different caps they came out with.

try hok -----@--------- silver and report back. like i said, iwatas arent the easiest for tough metallics. lays down clear very well tho.

that's your opinion. as i said i have had no problems with it. i find it to be one of the most adjustable guns i have owned.

i've seen people that can really lay down some metallics with them myself.. I am just not good with doing so with those guns. But with that being said, some of the tough metallics were always my weak point, and i found that for some reason when I started to use the walcom, i started having a lot more luck.

thats fine, u make it a point to disagree with me. but if u picked up the super nova, u would put ur 400s to the side.

either way, the most complaints the iwata has always been the metallic control. hence the orange and purple cap for less "over atomization".

".

Is the Supernova with Gold (basecoat) cap that much better than any LPH400 with orange/purple caps?

I have yet to see that gun in action, most painters I know spray base with SATA and clear with IWATA, go figure.

yes i disagree with you. nobody i know has had problems using the lph400 and i have had no problems with it.
problems with metallics is not a gun problem. it is application . metallic paint has been around for a long time. i've shot the same colors with a binks 62 , binks 7, jga's in lacquers, enamels and urethanes. the iwata simply makes it easier and saves materials . it helps a novice painter that has little gun control do a better job.
but your statement that the iwata wont shoot metallics is wrong. the orange and purple caps are designed to make your job of matching oem ti-coats easier .

I have trouble with certain metallic colors, even with the purple cap, but I cannot attribute it directly to the gun, since I do not have an alternative at this time.

But that would make a few of us who have experienced problems while using the Iwata.

Every paint line has colors that present a challenge. In the paint I use, it is when a particular metallic is combined with enough deep black to create a medium tone high metallic color. Oddly enough, I never have trouble with bright silvers.

then y is the orange cap for 90% of basecoat colors and 10% of the tougher ones to the purple.

its funny when i here it all the time... i had trouble spraying metallics till i got a sata. sooo much easier to have metallic control. i love my iwata for clear... but i dont like it so much for base. im happy u are perfect at everything u do

look hojo , when you quote someone on the net you are directing your post at them. i express an opinion , period. don't like it don't read it, move on . you come one here and say iwata's wont shoot metallics . wrong. you cant shoot metallics with an iwata. it aint the gun . it's the hand it is held in. always has been . no gun is going to make a top shelf painter out of anyone. i know plenty of gun hands who still use a binks #7 and don't have problems painting and do some outstanding work. stop quoting me and ignore me . you just make me tired all over.

Members ought to be able to disagree respectfully.

Let's keep it civil, gentlemen, it's the lack of this kind of thing that makes this board special.

I think it's pretty obvious that some guns excel at particular tasks, just as we as technicians have our strong and weak points.

No need for name calling.

where did i say wont? i have 4 iwatas and use them 95% of time, what i do know, is that they are TOUGHER to lay down a nice metallic. it is COMMON knowledge. crashtech makes a nice point. plus, u were in the van days, roll one up and puff puff give buddy.

I'll take a hit.... Sata for metalic bases Iwata for clear is how I get it done for now. I still haven't tried the orange or purple caps but I hear good things about the orange cap all the time.

I use the lvx orange cap for all solid base & purple for metallics & have had no problem getting them to lay down nice & even, I use lv4 for clear, slick as glass & I only do it as a hobby. If I can lay it even seems like anybody should be able to.

Based on my conversations with Barry, most or all paint lines have some colors that are hard to lay down. A particular color might be hard to spray in one brand, and easy in another.

I have a hunch that in my case, it sometimes has something to do with the electrical charge in the vehicle/paint. This is also, imo, why paint may lay down differently on the car body vs. the plastic bumper, even when the same primer is used.
