Iwata purple cap users...my base is mottled

Hey, you're starting to stutter there Crash you better calm down. LOL
I am not a pro and certainly do not have the experience or talent many of you on here have but I will add this. When spraying metallic paint on my recent project, using the LPH400 with silver cap, I started to get some striping on one panel. Couldn't for the life of me figure out why all the other panels were laying down great but now I was striping the deck lid. The cause was air pressure like Crashtech suggested. Apparently I had bumped the air pressure control and it dropped 3 psi. Things had been going well at 20 psi but 17 wasn't making it.

I didn't realize I had double posted until you pointed it out just now... fixed!... Anyway, it's interesting that you found 17 psi to be too low, though on some gauges 17 might be 12 for all we know, I don't own any junk gauges but they all read differently, so I have taken to using particular gauges with particular guns to ensure consistency. Alas, my ears are not tuned well enough to take the place of a gauge, even after all these years!

I just recently purchased a 0-30 psi liquid filled air gauge that I used to set a low pressure adjustment on my kerosene heater. I think I rig that up to test some of the gauges on my guns. If there is a big discrepancy I'll post up my findings. As to hearing the correct pressure I started just recently to pay more attention to how the gun sounds when it it spraying just right. Hopefully I'll get it right before my high frequency hearing loss gets any greater. It seems especially bad when my wife is talking. LOL

A stupid question from a senile old fart: How do you measure the air pressure at the cap? Only way I can think of is with a special cap that would have a test port on it to connect to a calibrated gauge?

Yes, you need a cap gauge to measure PSI at the cap. But it's not necessary to do that to get consistent results. 10 PSI ant the cap is the "legal limit," but might not be where the gun performs best on some materials.
