New user here...questions re epoxy

Hey all. Great site. Lucky to find it imo. Got a couple of questions re; epoxy. I'm old school, equipment, materials and tactics...willing to update. Painted a slew of cars as well as locomotives and coaches lol..
Bought a brand new repro GTO hood. Looks perfect and has ep on it. So, water based prepsol (700?), scuff red scotchbrite, epoxy, BC/CC? want underneath 60% black gloss. On the underneath there are supports etc. I used to use something like "Jamb it" to soften paint to spray jambs on an overall. Any luck with that under epoxy so I can get all the nooks (as opposed to scuffing)?
All I have is Binks 7's, Sharpe 75's right now. Except for enviromental reasons any problems using those guns? Different pressures for siphon guns listed on material label?
Also old enamel repaint (1990's)water based (700?),sand 180, epoxy, fill, 2k, epoxy (as sealer), BC/CC? Never used an epoxy before. Sounds like GOOD stuff.
I like the folks on here.
Thanks,
Dave

hello fellow long islander. make sure your gun has at least a 1.4 tip for the epoxy or you can reduce 50%. if it is real ep coating a good scuff with a red scotchbrite and your good to go. other more experienced guys will chime in on your other concerns.

good luck!

Glad your here and I will try to answer best I can, if I miss a point feel free to call, if I don't see the post this weekend.

First the hood, underside, spray with two coats of epoxy and you should have your 60%.
For top of hood:
Clean with 700.
DA with 180-320 (I like 180, just me)
Wash with 700
If very little metal is showing, shoot epoxy as a sealer and paint.
A fair amount of metal you should get epoxy un reduced on there first.

MY WAY on the new hood.
Sand with 180, shoot two wet coats of epoxy, let set 12-24 hours and shoot two-three coats of primer, block with 180, re-shoot the primer and finish out with the grit of your choice to apply sealer and paint.

Jamb it:
Had not heard that name in 25 years, works good on lacquers but pretty useless on urethanes or E-coats, throw it away and sand it after all this is a GTO.

Old, old school

Hello Long Islander!
Thanks for the replies. 25 years Barry eh? Ouch. I'm in a painter's time warp! Is The Whitesnake music video with Tawny Kitaan still relevant?
Thanks for the info. I was always a PPG, RM, Sherwin Williams snob I guess. I always stuck with what was working for me. I kept hearing about SPI products so here I am ready to be re-educated. How about that new band Guns & Roses eh? One hit wonder I predict.
Anyway the 1.4mm tip is new dangled too. I only go by needle and cap sizes. My Sharpe guns were my CC guns and the Binks 7 my BC gun. I also use a Sharpe "PG" gun for primers. Figure they will suffice for the time being. Those Sata and Iwata guns look nice. Off to that forum to bone up on guns.
Thanks
Dave

You can get by with them old siphon guns but they sure make a cloud and waste material compared to a quality gravity feed. Put some gloves on and take a red scotchbrite to the underside of the hood-it's not that much work to make sure you won't have adhesion problems.
