Primer application order

Ive been working on the body of my el camino restoration. The fenders and doors I had sanded down to bare metal, patched the areas needed, and straightened the dents as much as possible. Then I put down a layer of epoxy primer and began using body filler to get everything smooth. After sanding some areas would be back to metal and I applied another layer of epoxy.

After doing some more reading I think that I should have put down two layers of epoxy, then use 2k high build primer and do the body filler work on that layer then top it off with a reduced1:1:1 mixed epoxy as a sealer.

Does this sound the proper process that I should do? How many layer of 2k should I use, 1 before body filler one after or just epoxy sealer after body filler?

Thanks for any help

you dont want to be using filler over your 2k urethane primer. You are doing it right, over the epoxy. Do you bodywork over the epoxy, when done apply another coat of reduced epoxy, let flash then apply your 2k primer.

Your procedure is fine but there is another option: you can do filler work over polyester primer if you want more build to minimize your sand throughs. I often shoot 2-3 coats of poly over the epoxy then rough block it identify if any filler is needed, polyester fillers and glaze works just fine over polyester primer-just scuff it a little before application.

^^^^^That is the best of both worlds in the above post.. Not only are you applying the epoxy first, you are also preventing having to worry about trying to keep all the metal covered at all times while filler work is going on.. Does that make sense to you??

The polyester primer is basically spryable bodyfiller.. SO apply epoxy.. then next day apply polyester primer.. You will see where you are going to need filler.. So you can safely apply the filler over the polyester primer ( read a product like Evercoat G2 ) and not concern yourself with sand thrus and building a sandwich of epoxy and bodyfiller which in my opinion would be a major issue all in itself!!!!!!!!!!

Once you block it straight with that.. You can apply your 2k and block that or go to epoxy.. That would be your choice at that point!!

Southern polyurethanes doesn't have a polyester primer? is it worth it to use the filler on top of the poly primer instead of the epoxy. If its like a sprayable body filler its probably easier to sand and get a smooth result. So i would block it after the filler is applied on the poly primer if used then again once sprayed with 2k?

SPI doesnt make a polyester primer..

Most of us here use a product by a company called Evercoat..

Evercoat makes a ton of products for the refinish industry.. Most anyone you talk to uses some of their products..

I know I use thier products often..

Rage Gold bodyfiller that most of us use is made by Evercoat

As is the polyester primer I spoke of earlier called " G2"

Ill find a link and pic for you .. give me a sec

Is autobodytoolmart the cheapest place to get the stuff? Is the rage gold much better than regular bondo filler since the price is almost double?

Rage Gold is good, the premium fillers sand a lot better than the cheaper fillers.

Good filler will cost you less in the end, because you'll go through less of that $1 per foot long board paper.

I had a local shop butcher my front fenders for me a while back. They insisted on putting filler on bare metal because it has better adhesion, and they have been doing it that way since cars where invented....bla, bla, ba. Well, a rock from a rough driveway hit one of them where they meet down low in front of the grill shell. A chunk of filler the size of a quarter came off, but it didn't even dent the steel. Now, what is protecting the bare metal where the filler is cracked off and spider webbed out?

is rage gold extreme worth the $9 more than the rage gold?
I think so, but everyone is different. I don't really care if one filler is more than another because most of the time a gallon will last me at least a couple months, and the cost is NOTHING compared to the rest of my material bill.

I've heard that it does, but the only problem I personally have ever had is with the hardeners. If they have been sitting for a while, you are money ahead to pitch them and get new ones, it's the same stuff that goes in fiberglass resin, MEKP.

I ordered a gallon of rage gold extreme as well as g2. I will apply two layers of 1:1 epoxy on bare matel parts that I havent yet. Then apply two layers of the g2. Then use the rage gold filler and block sand. Then a layer of reduced epoxy as a sealer. Then should I apply a 2k primer or just go straight to base coat then clear?

You're filler work isn't going to turn out perfect so plan on applying another round of G2 or 2k after your filler is shaped then block it again-G2 or 2K at this stage the choice is up to you as either will work, when your blocking is perfected and final sanded to 320 then seal and paint.

I used Rage Gold exclusively for a while but I find the Marson Platinum Plus to be a very decent filler to apply and sand as well. It is also less money.
When it comes to ordering any products be sure to figuring in the shipping costs when pricing. I found my local jobber to be within a couple of bucks and sometimes lower priced than ordering online and paying shipping. Plus I don't have to wait 4 days for UPS.

x2! I recommened this a few years ago to the shop across the street......now every bodyman there uses it. its the only filler they stock. before they were using rage gold and rage extreme.

You know the funny thing is I have been using Marson Platinum (regular) and recently tried the Platinum Plus. I thought it was not as good as the regular stuff! In fact, I hated it! Does anyone use Platinum?
