Shop Stands

I'd like to weld up some stands on casters to hold things for paint. Like to hold doors and fenders, possibly a hood.

Curious what people have come up with that is versatile?

I threw 2 pairs of these together one day for about 50 dollars worth of box tubing

i never had any stands for anything. i always hung everything. this way i can spray 360deg around everything. i have these heavy washers welded to the ceiling everywhere in a grid pattern then i made 3' long hooks from 1/8" rod. a hook bent on each end. this brings the lower end of the hook a little higher than head height. i can hook the washers anywhere i want. i can throw some lock wire loops on whatever parts i want to hang then just put them up on the hooks. its the most versatile way to do it i think. you can basically hang anything you want in any location or orientation.

I've been using that same set-up for a little over 20 years. I'm curious how long you've been using your hooks so I can tell if you stole my idea or I stole yours? I have 4 rods 3' long and 4 at 5' long. 10' ceiling.

lol, that has to be maybe around 2002-2003 ish i would say. i was using that method a couple years before i built my shop. everything i used to paint was hung so everything like car doors to motorcycle bodywork and small parts. i must have 40-50 hooks. i dont use them much anymore but still once in awhile

I have all kinds of stands. I really like the Astro stands, but I build stands of needed. Biggest deal for me is to be able to move parts around so I dont have to leave cars outside when I completely over book myself like I always do.

I even clamp them together when needed.

The wooden stands, dollies etc are handy cause you can send screws, fasteners, etc anywhere you need in them to hold parts. And easy to build. Got Eric O. On the tv nice! He’s good entertainment and a great mechanic. And from my neck of the woods the good old prny haha. And hey the tires are still flat on the Trail Blazer  lol.

I have a couple stands but they take up a lot of room - I primarily use fold up saw horses (cheap) and hang parts on hooks that I hook to my garage door tracks - keep thinking I need more stands but it’s been working this way for 15 years

My old shed was all 3/4 plywood on the walls and roof. I drilled in hooks anywhere I needed them. Definitely miss that.

They’re def handy. When I used to paint a lot of sport bikes it was kinda annoying though. Fairings hanging all over and they’re so light that the air pressure from the gun will blow them around so had to hold with one hand and spray with the other. Def a job to wear gloves lol. That and half the paint goes in the air. Don’t really miss doing them.

When we painted the Bug last summer we made an A-Frame out of scrap lumber to hang all the parts on.
Had casters so we could roll it out into the sun after shooting.

You have to be creative according to your environment for sure.
Working vs Painting requires a a different type generally but can be a combo of. Just depends on "what" the work requires. I've done it All ways possible in order for the Best outcome and some were really bizarre but necessary.
The Dragsters were the most complicated with all the panels and graphics and such.

i like doors hung that way.
I'd like to build a set of those to use on the next one. I use scaffold and cheap foldup saw horses for most of my stuff. Primed the fenders using the scaffold and ended up moving those to saw horses for color and clear.
