How did the damage occur?

If it was fire, I would clean the surface up with a blue or black strip disc. Then using a flexible metal ruler, check for warpage. If the damage occurred from a chemical spill, strip disc / 80 grit on a da, or media blast it.

Odd, that it would have such fairly straight lines at the top. Certainly looks as though something was spilled on it.

I would definitely media blast that in order to be sure you get all of the rust off. Of course SPI black epoxy on the bare metal.

Looks like it's a late model Subaru Legacy. 2019-2020. Nothing on those Subies is cheap. Good quality used hood with no damage is going to be $350 minimum. New OEM one is not much more than that actually. Around $500. Aftermarket will be cheaper but if it's a nice car I wouldn't put an aftermarket hood on it. Some are decent. Some are not. Most will fit, some of them will be much more flexy than OEM.

If the damage is limited to what we see in the pics (is that body filler at the front?) then I would repair it. This would be a good candidate for Ospho. I wouldn't want to media blast it. Ospho, neutralize, then 80 grit, epoxy and proceed. Provided it's not warped from fire, but that doesn't look like a fire to me.

Looking at the pic a little closer it does indeed look like body filler. Looks like it all peeled/popped off? If the damage is extensive, replacement might be a better option. Just depends on the time and money you want to spend.

How did the damage occur?

that's what I'm wondering. I was told the paint just started peeling off. how long ago I don't know but it looks like its been a while and why,"just started peeling off."
theyve taken it to a couple of body shops. so far no one will touch it so I was sent me this pic and asked if I could fix it. my first thought was that there has to be a reason body shops wont touch it. I can see paint bubbling up along the front edge/lip,too.
Im already getting a feeling of "I pass" on this one. she was somewhat pushy about repairing over replacing and with body shops not wanting to touch it......

Pushy customer telling me how to do something is a hard pass for me… :)

My guess is that lacquer primer and a clear blend led to this. Since she is such an expert, tell her that you will give her advice on how she can fix it for $100 an hour. Or, buy a new hood.

I can see why you are apprehensive about taking on the work based from a picture, pushy lady, and the fact two body shops declined to repair the damaged paint, however........ until you see the extent of the damage in person, you'll never know if this is a simple a strip and repaint job. I am very curious to know if there is any damage to the underside of the hood. If there is, the owner of the car is not being truthful how the damage occurred, her deceit is catching up to her with no one wanting to fix it.

I'd be willing to bet that "I pass" from the other shops was more like her not liking the cost.

I have no idea so I'm passing the buck on to you......................using the picture, give me an estimate.

I'm saying on the low side, $1,200-$1,500?

Is that including blending the fenders?

That sure looks like some kind of aggressive caustic attack to me via kind of drip line edge from an eave or overhead surface that dripped off in line onto the car hood and then off the front of the sloping hood. A new hood is likely a best choice for that reason. That person should file a comprehensive claim (if they have that) and go from there--at a Subaru dealer and see how that pans out for them. I don't think anyone would be happy doing this for what prices have been mentioned. Too much trouble for too little money and too much expectation from a customer.

No, that is just to repair and paint the hood. Me personally I would probably add 150 to blend the fenders, looking at the pic I don't see them being that terrible to prep out. The fenders are small enough. I don't feel that color would be terribly difficult to get close enough and the tops of the fenders don't have a larger surface area so someone looking to pay the least will just have to learn to live with it.

Again this is just my opinion. I don't do that much work like this and when I do its for a friend, so the "buddy" deals come into factor.
