Time to strip a 66 Mustang with a DA ?

Can anybody give me an idea of how much time it would take to strip the exterior of an original paint 66 mustang coupe with a DA ?

Depends on fillm thickness and what material you are stripping. Epoxies and unhardened enamel will load up faster than others. Go a panel at a time and be patient cause its gonna be slow! I suggest a sander/polisher.

If you are lucky, the better part of a day. I usually use a mud hog with 40 and then 80 grit. It takes about 4 hours then. If you use one of the original type DAs that you can set like a grinder, it will go a lot faster than with a "palm" type.

i have a porter cable 7424 that can rip through original paint. the time involved dropped drastically when i went from 120 grit down to 80 grit and bought higher quality sanding discs, ie, not from the home improvement store( yes, big mistake and lesson learned). the last one i took down to metal was an 87 blazer ad it took about 10 ish hours. my first one done was a 95 mustang and i used a pc palm sander using 120 grit. i think i had about 35-40 hours just sanding and i dont even want to think of the $$$ wasted on sanding discs.( yup, 'nother lesson learned. a palm sander for woodworking has a pretty small throw and takes way too long for me).

My tbird is taking forever (it seems) to strip with the DA. :(

I'll have to look into these higher quality discs. Where do you guys think I could get them? I only have the 5 inch palm sander.

I use a DA to rough up the paint and then apply Aircraft Stripper to everything but seams. A couple of minutes and I can scrape 90% of the paint off into a blue shop towel that I then throw away.
Once the majority of the paint is off I wash the panel thoroughly with Dawn and water. Wipe the panel dry with blue shop towels and then use compressed air to dry the nooks, crannies and seams. Put a fresh 80 disc on the DA and go over the entire panel. Each panel takes an hour or so but still way faster (for me) than the DA only method.

Maybe there's just too many layers on my car? I was slathering on the stripper at first but it only seemed to remove the top coat or two. The car had been resprayed in the early 90s. The original paint and primer below seems impervious to all but elbow grease.

Drop a $100 on some roloc disk and you can strip a panel in a matter of 5 minutes.. Worth every dollar in my opinion.. Just make sure to wear a respirator for this task as the air will be full of particles for hours and hours and hours :)

$100 per panel???? You are making the big bucks.

I don't know what kind of Roloc BK means, but $100 worth of any of them would no doubt do at least a whole car, not just one panel!

I think Bondoking is suggesting that if you spend around $100.00 on some roloc discs, you'll have enough discs to strip an entire car in a short period of time.

I think he's thinking of taking off all the bondo too. :) there's a few spots where that stuff was at least half an inch think. The guy who did it was surely an artist with the stuff but he went way overboard!

BK, you didn't work on a '64 tbird 20 years ago did you?

I get 50 rolocs for 8 dollars at the swap meet. Choose your grit. Works as good as any other brand.

Yeah, I was joking. Just forgot to put the smiley face on.

Lol.. I buy the 3M ones from my jobber. $32 a box. I figure 3 boxes and you can strip the car fast as all get out. Ive bought cheaper ones like Indasa brand, but they didnt last grinding metal like the 3M so I switched back. $100 per panel ... Thats funny right there

I use the 3 inch yes.. They are the 3M Green Corps. Part #01408.. and they are $34 a box at my jobber.. Just went out and looked at the box to make sure

That 24 grit would seem very aggressive to me. What tool do you use? Rather, what rpm? I have used them to grind welds and heavy rust but not paint on a panel.
