Hi guys I was going to buy some trizact to sand a pickup I just painted with three coats of some left over MS Clear. I typically sand with water and a block for my resto projects, but don't want to spend that kind of time on a daily pickup. What are you guys using/recommendations from start to finish... thanks, Dan.

both my 1000 and 1500 steps are done dry with finishing film. sometimes i dont bother with the 1000. depends on the job. after that i goto the 3000 step. i usually use green eagle bufflex discs but you can use 3000 trizact if you cant get eagle stuff. after 3000 i goto the 5000 trizact then buff.

Hi Jim, is the finishing film made by 3m? I have access to 3m, what should I get, start to finish, thanks.

Jim, do you use an interface pad while conducting these steps? Do you find that the d/a cuts the clear flat like a block would? Thanks, Dan.

yes you can get 3m finishing film if thats what is available. i personally use eagle just because is 1/2 price and last 3-4 times as long. 3m will work fine though for all the products. i do always use an interface pad with every step. as for the block.....well i would say i get it to within 90% of what a block would get it to and i can do the job in 1/4 the time. how flat the final finish ends up has to do with how you sprayed it though. the da procedure will get all the orange peel out, dust nibs and leave you with a glass surface but if everything was prayed kinda heavy then you'll end up with a bunch of urethane wave which a da wont get out. that has to be blocked. if i end up with a job that has a bunch of urethane wave then i block with 400 and reclear.

So you cut it flat with 1000 finishing film, and then go over it with 1500, both dry?...then go wet with 3000 and then 5000 trizact? Thank you Jim, very helpful....where can I get the eagle products?

yes for something really nice i will cut with 1000 first. sometimes on certain jobs i will just do 1500. it all depends on what it is. best place to buy eagle stuff is on amazon. their finishing film is called supertack yellow film discs.

I can vouch for the eagle finishing films as well. Great stuff.

I need to look into getting Eagle and putting it in the store.. I heard the USC paper that has just came out recently is designed by the guy who did Eagle.. So I am curious to see. Have you tried the USC paper Jim?

I just broke out the sander for a few projects I needed to get done.. It sure is faster. I just have always struggled with it..
But they discontinued one of the Hookit lines and switched back.. I can't remember which one it is, but with the newer paper I do like it a little bit better.

Eagle is half the price. 3m comes 25 to a box and eagle is 50. Too bad you can't use prime shipping.

I have been using the eagle 1500, green 2500 dry then 3m 3000 and 5000. seems to be a pretty good combo. I think the 2500 would work better if it were the wet system but eagle discontinued that. the dry version doesn't work very well when you wet it any.

But I start with a hard block with 800 first wet, then 1000, then move onto the da. I get the tight spots and curves by hand with 1200 wet and then 1500 followed by 2000 that I can't get with the da very good.

Since concentrating on using just about every grit like shine recommends, it really has helped the final process of not having to go back and get a few coarser stray scratches out.

It may be overkill and some think I waste my time....but it sure does look good when I'm done after 2 weeks..LOL!

I am wanting to try out some Trizact 3000 and 5000 on this black job I am working on. Thing is, I do not want to buy an entire box of any of the stuff. Im thinking I will need 2 of each (3000 and 5000) in 6" and 2 of each (3000 and 5000) in 3". Do they sell "jobber" packs of the stuff or do you have to pony up $$$$?
If so, does anyone on here want to sell me just what I need?

your local jobber will usually sell them by the disc but dont quote me. for a whole car 2 5000 discs will do it but you'll need 6 or so of the 3000. it doesnt last anywhere near as long as the 5.

I used the 3000 trizact about 10 years ago on a compact truck and really liked it. I cannot completely recall, but it seems like I only had to use 1 or 2 on the whole truck after it had been stepped out to 2000 wet by hand. I really hope i dont need 6 to get it done.

Sandpaper is one thing I don't skimp on. I know guys that will wear a piece of 1000 grit out and spend double the amount of time sanding.

there is no way shape or form your going to do a whole car with 2 sheets of 3000 trizact. all you get out of one of those is 1 hood or 2 doors or a roof. something like that. 3m even says that. if you go more than that your just running foam around on the paint and its not doing anything. i really dont like 3m 3000 for the reason that you cant tell when its shot. you can just keep going with it and its making foamy stuff on the paint but its doing absolutely nothing. the 5000 is a totally different and new tech. you can do a whole car with 2 discs. i have been told they are supposed to revamp the 3000 but who knows if that was bs.

My paint store sells the Trizact 3000 individually or by the box.
Individually they are over $7.00 a piece.
That's to much for me. I use the Abralon instead.

with paint at 800 a gal your worrying about 6 sheets of paper ??????

I'm with you there. Sandpaper rationing is for Maaco. Charge the customer for every bit of material used.

HAHA!! Yeah buddy! Its not the price of any one thing that scares me, its the sum of all that does. Especially once you get to this final detailing phase of the paint job.....after youve spent $1500+ on all the previous steps. This always happens to me. Ill spend the money, it just hursts more at this point.
