trizact or??

To that point, An entire box of trizact would be way too much for the DIY'er like myself. Would anyone be interested in going in on something like this? I wouldnt mind paying for the box upfront, if I knew I could offload the remainder at the end of the project. I think the trizact unit price is around 5-6 dollars a piece if you buy a box. Any interest?

steve it doesnt even make sense to do that. so your looking at $6 vs $8 in 6 sheets of paper. you realize thats only $12 then by the time you ship it the other person you have saved yourself about a buck. with the cost of paint, sandpaper and everything else if your concerned about $12 you have seriously taken up the wrong hobby my friend.

I don't want you to feel like we're beating you up Steve, but c'mon. To put things into a bit of perspective: the cut & buff job alone on a top 8 finalist for the Riddler awards will cost as much as a new full-sized truck. That's no BS. One of the finalists a few years back had $15k (150 labor hours) into just his gas pedal lol. It had to be original and "just right". His machinist probably pulled all of his hair out trying to make him happy.

No offense taken. I suppose it could stick around for the next job whenever that may be. I was thinking more along the lines that my local supplier does not sell singles, only boxes of 15 at about 90/ea for the 3000 and 5000. So my thought was instead of having 180 in sandpaper, I could use what I need (about 60 bucks worth) and offload the rest (about 120 worth). I suppose I am looking at my math differently. I did see Amazon has the singles in 3000 but I dont see anyone that sells the 5000 in singles. I also am not quite sure 5000 is necessary. I just wanted to see if it gets me out from behind the Makita any faster.

I thought I had read somewhere that you can get the Mequiars equivalent at a much cheaper price? Remember 3m owns Mequiars.

Don't quote me on that and I haven't even used any of the Meguiars.

Thanks for that link. FWIW worth I offered the guy 7 bucks a piece (5 total) with shipping included and he accepted.

Glad to hear it worked out for you, $7 ea doesn't sound bad. I'll have to remember that

Having never used these finer grits myself, I assume it takes absolutely no effort from the buffer and a foam pad to get a 5000 grit scratch out? I would also assume you guys are doing this to minimize swirls? How are the various grits about loading the paper up and are you having to constantly clean the paper?

Its being done to minimize buffing time. You can almost get away with not even compounding. The discs are foam trizact and dome wet so you never need to clean the disc. It doesnt load up.

This video shows a compounding step and two polishing steps after using 5000 grit? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC1zdAN9Lk8

I'll give it to 3M, from bumper repair to wet sanding and buffing a car, they can never have a simple process.

Haha yeah problem is they come out with a new system every 6 mos. their new system has no compound at all. You end with 5000 then just one buffing step. I have not used that yet. I still like to finish in 5000 then a quick compound and single polish step. It definitely the fastest sand and buff system i have used. Still think their dry finishing film and 3000 trizact sux though. The 5000, compound and polish are awesome.

I used 6 3000 mequirs discs yesterday on a 59' cad fender. The 5000 trizacts have legs but in my experience a 3000 trizact or mequirs (same) can only milk a 2' by 2' square. After that it's a total waste of time.

This was after 800/1000/1200/1500/2000/2500 by hand. Blocking by hand blows but I've never been satisfied with 1000/1500 trizacts ability to make a flat panel.

Wet or Dry?? Look up Unigrit Damp Sanding, 2 3000 discs for the whole car!. Shows Mike Phillips damp sanding a 55 Chev.

Are any of you using the Eagle discs from 80 up to 600?

I just saw a video on you tube for 3m trizac 6000. Next will probably be a sheet of linen with Velcro on the back, lol.

lariat the meguiars unigrit are the 3m trizact discs in a different box and you arent going to do a whole car with 2 discs. of course you can but after a door or 2 it wont be doing anything.

you ever use denim jim ? use to use it on lacquer years ago on a da . actually worked pretty good.
why would any one try to do a whole car with 2 sheets ? just does not make sense to me. spend 3k on materials and worry about a few sheets of paper .

Haha no never denim. Thats some old school process right there. Before my painting career for sure.
