lariat the meguiars unigrit are the 3m trizact discs in a different box and you arent going to do a whole car with 2 discs. of course you can but after a door or 2 it wont be doing anything.
Jim, search "Damp-Sanding a 1956 Chevrolet Belair", Mike Phillips used 2 Unigrit 3000 Foam Finishing Discs to sand entire car prior to buffing. Lots of pictures.

your going to find that painters pay no attention to detail shops.

an old painter i knew would save old jeans and cut circles from them and use glue for sand paper to put them on a da. early trizac . :)

Lariat, i dont even need to look it up. I can do 3 cars with one disc. If i wanted to. With those discs after about 2 doors they arent doing anything. 3m will even tell you that. He obviously doesnt know the discs or system well enough. Just another person giving bad info on the internet.

I got a box of 3000 and 5 pieces of 5000. I plan to just cut the 6" pieces to 2 3" pieces where needed for use on my 3" DA. Hopefully this is enough to do my truck. Question, can the orange peel be manipulated at all with the 3000?

you can not cut paint beyond about 1000. you are wasting time and money. do your blocking correctly before ever starting the finish work.

Everybody does things different. There can be a difference between perfection outside and perfection inside. Inside perfection under the flo lights takes me twice as long and I use more of the finishing discs.

When I use the finishing film discs I use a bunch. They quit working efficiently for me after a 2' by 2' area. This is with single stage and I tend to get more life with Universal clear.

I'm flat out wasting the customer's time when I try to milk supplies beyond their usefullness

Jim, Mike Phillips is one of the top paint polishing instructors in North America, he worked for Mequiars for a number of years and now works at Autogeek. I believe he knows the system quite well, for the record he is "Damp Sanding" using the Unigrit Foam Backed 3000 grit finishing disc with a DA buffer on the 56 Chev. Your mileage may vary......

yes all the trizacts need to be used damp. i dont know what he is doing but i dont really care who he is. if you are color sanding a complete car and have it in a 1500 grit finish which is 3m's process your not gettin more than 2 doors. if he is saying something to the contrary then he is doing nothing but giving marketing hype to sell the product. no way shape or form are you color sanding a whole car with 2 discs. i have them here in my shop and have been using them almost everyday for the past 5 years. on the other hand i dont know what he is trying to do with it on a orbital buffer. obviously not sanding and buffing a car. just some light detailing maybe?

seriously ? another autogeek cheerleader . it's bad enough to put up with on tri5 so please dont start that crap here . this is a professional painters forum and i can assure you we need no instructions from a detailer .

Paint correction and doing a full on color sand and buff are 2 different worlds.

You can be the best detailer but suck at a full color sand and buff and vice versa.

For kicks I looked up that article. He isn't doing a full cut and buff. He is doing a paint correction. All he is doing with 3000 is removing the fine scratches and swirls on top of the paint. He is not removing 1500 grit scratches on panels that are cut completely flat from edge to edge. Big difference.......

Last job I just finished up I used 1 piece of 3000 for each panel almost, and 3 pieces of 5000. That's just how it is.

i just talked with a man who let one of these detail shops sand and polish his late model vette. it is already starting to fail .

I'm not an "Autogeek Cheerleader", I'm a SPI cheerleader, simply trying to provide additional info in the Wetsanding/Polishing/Detailing section.

A shop owner near my house is good friends with a new 3M field rep so he's going to set up a Trizac demo for me with this rep at his shop and I think this will be good so I can speak somewhat intelligently on the subject. I guess during this demo I'm not supposed to say Ultra Cutting Creme would cut this faster? :)
