If anyone is wondering how universal acts in the cold: I do mobile repair for dealers, today was 18deg/5deg. windchill. Full bumper on a Sienna. Two coats of universal reduced about 10% with one cap of polar for 3oz of clear. Cured and buffed in 30 min.

Damn, only a cap full.. Thats roughly a half ounce if memory serves me right.. Killer in my opinion... And no the polar will no hurt long term durability etc.. I also assume u used fast activator??

Spraying SPI Universal Clear in very cold temperatures

THANK YOU KENT!!!!

This is the type of information that will help a lot of people and I am unable to test or give out information with these kind of conditions.

By the way, Kent is always calling me asking, if I do this and this at 50 degrees below zero, how long before, I can buff?

I'm consistent in my answers to Kent, " beats me, test it".

PERFECT!!!

That should have read reduced 10% with 860 then added a cap of polar. Yes BK I had the fast act. I measured a cap and it comes out to 2 teaspoons, so less than 1/2oz.
Barry, is there a point where adding too much polar becomes detrimental? Would another 1/2 cap screw me up somehow? Don't say Test It!

Yes of course there will be a point of slight problem if you add just a little each time to test.
Less likely to have an issue in the cold as you can in the heat, so experiment on!

Just so you guys know, AAE does spot work of car lots, in the parking lots.

Kinda funny but last year it was Saturday around 3 or so and I got a call from a guy in north east during the cold part of winter.
Anyways he had tried the SPI and just wanted to tell me that he had sprayed 3 cars that day in 15-20 degree weather and all three dried just great.

So painters, never complain about your paint booth conditions again! LOL

Now I feel like a wimp. Three cars is pretty good when you have to deal with trying to get things to dry right. The only real challenges are keeping your water from freezing on the panel, getting your filler to dry in less than 20hrs and keeping the clear from running. I am going to get a 2000w lamp that should do a lot to speed things up. It also helps that the humidity has been between 60-80%. That activates the polar better.

Wow.. that's crazy.. I couldn't do it.. I hate going outside to put wood in the burner.. let alone paint a car in this crap.. lol.

I am originally from upstate NY so I am familiar with cold and after moving to the Southwest I have become spoiled by sunshine and warmth. I complain and often stay in the house if the garage temp is below 50.
Some may call that being a whimp - I call it wisdom!

I didn't think any real curing could happen below 55°. Can Polar really help crosslinking at such low temperatures?

Most solvents start taking a rest at 56-58 degrees, ISO start about 48 degrees, really slowing down.
There is still some reactivity but really weak, the polar does help, although not as much as a beautifull 90 degree day.
I have had enough of winter already!

So, what does this mean for durability when sprayed at 20-30 degrees?

Once its cured out, nothing, However "long-chain polymerization" could make it stronger, (could).

I use a med. wave lamp. Today, 18deg., silver, got area up to 90deg with the lamp. If it was a dark color, I wouldn't need the lamp so much. Water ran down it after 45min. or so and no damage. Remember, this work is on dealer stuff. They want it to get off the lot and forget about it. It's not easy to accept but if they are happy then I am. I am sure that many of you consider me a hack and that may be true but I am delivering a service that meets the expectations of my customers.

I don't think anyone here considers you a hack, if nothing else I have talked to you enough about the concerns you have, to know you are going over board and I have told you that before.
