What are the benifits of epoxy only (no 2k)

That's a great point. I was just looking for a nice long board yesterday. What's one if the more popular ones?
 
I finally got an AFS, and I really like it. I have a 24" durablock too. It id useless for panels with any curve at all...the paper wrinkles because the foam compressess. Whatever you get, make sure it has a spring steel base. Happy blocking :D

Ok, today I went out and bought two different kinds of long boards ( one riged, one slightly flexible ) and 50 feet of 180 sandpaper roll to go with it. Should help quite a bit. Thanks guys
 
I just finished a few tailgates tonightl. Apparently trailer hitches were a popular thing a few weeks ago. Anyways, here was my process.

Pulled dents,
filler - knocked down with 80 then 150
1 coat of spi epoxy
3 coats of 2k

I then blocked that down with 80, then 150, using guide coat of course, lol
Went down through to the epoxy in a few spots.

2 more coats of 2k, 150,320,500(palm sander with interface pad)

spi reduced 1:1:1
dupont black
2 wet coats fo SPI Universal.


Anyways, these are production style jobs. If they are glass flat with no peal they wont match the trucks. Ill just buzz them with 1500 tomorrow night and wheel them.


But yes, anything finer then 150 when blocking primer to make it straight is useless. I gotta make a nice block. I have a paintstick thats been with me for awhile.. Thats always been my tool.
 
Also, after my first round of priming, I set the gates outside and then brought them back into my garage and turned my heater one for 45 min. Metal temp was 120.(infrared tube heater)

Second, round, same process. Its nice with small parts I can kind of mini bake them in my garage.
 
OJ .... At first I was wondering why you would need a heater, it's been in the upper 80's to upper 90's here. Then I saw that you are in Michigan, and remembered that you only get one week of summer each year. LOL

Lol. I just turned it on for a few to bake the primer. It's been on the 80's here. So ya it was warm in my garage for s few.

yes . i make hardwood consoles and trim for streetrods and use the scraps. i have one that uses 2 pieces of board paper. some of the early 60's cars had a lot of real estate in the qrt panels. i also have a bunch of cardboard tube i use

Yes the sheet metal on my 67 imperial would qualify as quite a bit of real estate.
I'm thinking the right size cardboard tubes would work well for some of the side body lines on the car
 
in my younger days i did a lot of 60's cars. the impala's were really tuff to get straight with a pos board file so i made my own. the tubes work really well on those long lines with a curve.

As fate would have it a 58 gmc step side is my first exposure to all of this body and prep work and I can't count the number of times I've thought to myself ,"WHAT flat surfaces?" (I'm doing the cab first) .
 
it would be hard to think of what i have not done in 42 years. i worked on many that were all original and still the family car. lot of lacquer work back then .

if you think lacquer wont kill you keep painting without a mask . why do people do this. i've lived in fear for 42 years because of what i do and have a cat scan every year now. mask are cheap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nice car but not worth dying for. sorry it is just one of my pet peeves.
