Long story short, guy at work painted his own parts over the weekend. Used epoxy for sealer 1:1:1 with spi885, dbc base with spi885 and UV clear. Only problems were on the decklid, other pieces were fine. He said he sprayed one coat of sealer - 60 min flash time, 2 coats of base - 30 min flash, then cleared. He said the problem didn't show until he baked the parts 115 for 15 min. Any ideas. I was not there, nor did I see the prep procedures.

As a newb I learn so much from everyone's answers :) You said it was baked, could that have done it? Like if things under the clear weren't cured?

My best guess??????
Epoxy was still to wet, maybe he used extra on the deck lid and it just did not set long enough?

What was under the sealer is probably what's causing the problems. What was done differently on the decklid?

bob and barry are right. its not the base, its what is under it that is moving. i see that typically with epoxy or a sealer put over wet or uncured epoxy.

It was just a brand new decklid with the black e-coat. He said he just scuffed it and sprayed the epoxy reduced 1:1:1. I wasn't there so I don't know exactly how he cleaned it of his flash times. I was just going off of what he told me and nothing stuck out other than he put the epoxy on heavy, but he said he sprayed a light coat.

Isn't 1:1:1 awefull thin? I mean just a splash of reducer is usually enoguh to make the epoxy lay real smooth. Not saying that's what caused the problem, just seems like that would be like spraying tinted reducer.

Not sure, I've always sprayed it 1:1:1(50%) as a sealer. I've never had any problems like those in the pics I posted.

I almost always mix it at 1-1-1 as a sealer-never any problems. I think that wasn't e-coat on that aftermarket part.

I shot the rest of the car Wednesday. Epoxy sealer, reduced 1:1:1 with 885, dbc base reduced with 885, 4 heavy coats of UV clear. No issues here.

I personally think he may have rushed the base, but he's my boss so I just agree. LOL.

Wow, you got projects stacked up like cord wood in there! looks good!

Did you paint the door jambs at the same time you sprayed the body? Just curious if you were swinging the doors open and painting all at once.

Does that look good!!!!!

That place looks like a candy store with all the other toys laying around.

Thanks guys, it was a bare metal car at autorama a few years back. He finally decided to finish it. It will look better once its flat sanded and polished. I used a new gun to clear it and it went on pretty heavy!

As far as the jambs...yes I opened the doors and sprayed the jams on the body while painting the exterior. The inner doors were cut in off the car and then masked.
