Whats a good basecoat to use nowadays.

there are cheaper brands but not decent. wanda and motobase are about the best bang for your buck that your going to find i think and still be a decent quality. wanda can be anywhere from 350-900 a gal. compare that to something like daimont which is 600-1600...and that was maybe 6 years ago. who knows what it cost now. diamont is considered an mid line also. it falls under glasurit which would be higher than that.

Some of my customers are astonished to hear that we could spend close to $2000 on the materials for their paint job, if you count everything. I think many of them simply don't believe me. Quality base coat is essential to people who value their time. A redo costs more than the paint.

I don't buy paint but moto base if
The employee doing something but I hear every day on the tech line $1400 to 1800 a gallon for some blues and reds.
It's going to get worse soon.
Just saw where the company that does private label is raising their urethane reducer by 30%.

That is a low-grade reducer that if used in my stuff causes me a bunch of headaches.
Works in crap products but not polyurethanes (non-bs polyurethanes, I should say)

its getting as bad as gas prices when the oil that was refined for this gas was bought when it was 20.00 a barrel less. My military supplier is just tacking on 20% to all invoices due to supply chain issues, then send me expired paint they claim to recertify.
I always wondered why solvent prices do not flutter up and down with the price of oil, but now its blamed on shut downs and tariffs causing shortages. I'd rather buy 2 gallons of silver from the coating store for 119 a gallon than get 1 gallon of name paint for 600, but I can use the practice.

I get new price adjustments EVERY
Friday up or down like you said all related to gas.
Until this year never even paid attention as pennies a lb up one week and pennies down the next week.
Depending on solvent, all this year are up 18 to 30%

I have paid $550-$600 for Motobase for the last 3 years so $600 seems about right to me. Just talked to Chad earlier this morning at Chads Paint Supply (SPI dealer) and he said it is up a little and $600 is about what it is a gallon. Not much different than my last 2 paint jobs.

Did prospray change? I used it a lot in the past and had no issues. In fact I had some really good factory color matches with it. I used to buy it from Chad. He switched to selling Motobase and thats all the rage now on this site, but I like Moto also.

Thank you everyone for the information. I will probably end up going with motobase. I am a bit new to this game (glad I found this website before I ordered any clear coat or color for that matter). One more quick question, with motobase you end up with 2 sprayable gallons, is this enough for a 66 Mustang (jambs, underside of hood, etc.)?

Motobase cover great. 2 gallons will do the entire car inside, outside, topside, underside. I went through about 1.5 gallons on my '63 Dart and that was a Mopar so all under the hood, I did a lot of the underside but I also made a few mistakes that had to be redone. If I did not mess up I could have gotten away with 1 gallon. I am going to buy 2 gallons for the Valiant.... just in case :)

Just to make sure. You are saying one gallon of paint (which equals 2 after reduced)?
